How to organize the paragraph Paragraph –a section of a piece of writing -begins on a new line and contains at least one sentence. Usually presents one main idea. Topic Sentence  Supporting Sentences  Concluding Sentence

Topic Sentence = one-sentence summary of the entire paragraph Topic + controlling ideas A role model inspires people to do their best. (topic) (controlling idea)

Computers can be used in many different situations. Computers have changed enormously in the past 20 years. Different computers can appeal to different people.

Five features of a Good Topic Sentence It should guide the whole paragraph. It should not be a well-known fact. It needs to be specific. It cannot be too specific. It must contain a controlling idea. Credit cards are useful. A credit card is one of the most important things that a traveler need while on vacation.
