Oaxacan wood carving Good is in the details

Oaxaca Oaxaca is a state in the south of Mexico. It is a very rural area and many people live on farms that are surrounded by forests. For generations the people of Oaxaca have been carving animal figures out of a special kind of wood found in that region.

The wood carvings The wood carvings are of all kinds of different animals that are found in the region. The wood carver carves the animal shape and then a different artist paints the figures in unrealistic and unusual ways.

Painting the wood carving The Oaxaca style is to paint a base coat using bold colors. Then they will add in many small details using many different colors.

Its all in the details! Many of the details are dots, lines, strips. These details are what makes there sculptures so wonderful.
