Popular music By Thalia Fernandez

Different genres in the 60’s In the 1960’s fashion, society and music was taking over, continuing massive hits from the 1950’s . Genres like the “British invasion”, “motown R&B” and especially “Rock and Roll” was playing throughout the sixiest. Rock and Roll Motown/R&B The Marvelettes The Supremes The Drifters Stevie Wonder British Invasion Chubby checker Elvis Presley The Beatles The Rolling Stones Chubby checker was known to bringing the “ The Twist” in the early 1960’s. The Twist became a worldwide dance groove. The British Invasion is the name given to the British rock bands music in the mid 1960’s. The motown R&B was mostly recorded by the African American group singers and song writers.

Hit Music in the 60’s Mototown R&B The Ronettes - Be My Baby – 1965 = The Ronettes were an American group that came out in the 1950’s, winning a Grammy award for “Be my Baby” in 1965. Also the song came out as a worldwide hit. Ben E King- Stand By Me – 1961 = The song “Stand by me” became a US and UK hit. Entering the Songs of the Century list. The Shirelles – Will you still love me tomorrow – The hit song was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King , recorded by The Shirelles in 1960. The Marvelettes – Please Mr Postman – The number hit achieved the position on the charts in late 1961 also achieving a number one hit on the R&B chart too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrVbawRPO7I

Rock ‘N’ Roll in the 60’s The rock and roll was taking over the sixties leaving famous hits such as …………… My girl – The temptations Yesterday – The Beatles I want you back – Jackson 5 Oh Pretty Woman – Roy Orbison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6ad4exoxe8 Every female would scream at the top of their lungs for different boy bands to sing a jazzy rock and roll songs. Everyone love to do crazy dance moves. The swings, doing the twisting and turning, girls being lifted from the ground and having the time of their lives. Males would wear suits with tucked in T- shirts with fitted trousers on and girls nicely styled hair and make up with headbands and floating dresses on.

Photos from the 60’s

Why it connects Whilst researching about the popular music and the way they used to dress it relates to central performance because the scene at the fandango ballroom and the first scene where different characters sees charity in the lake, the females tend to wear the floating dresses with different colors. In the 1960’s females style was very presentable and classy so it connects. In the musical and film of sweet charity it was very jazzy and throughout the 1960s it was all up beat and made you want dance and do the twist. Also the make up in the film version of sweet charity in “big spender” its very similar to the make up the hippies used to wear in the late 1960’s.

I feel whilst researching the 1960’s I feel as if it could help with my character as I feel like my character is very American with a sassy attitude towards the other characters, listening to the lyrics and the beat the sixties had made you connect to the song and have a feel to the music. I also think it will help for the production as it gives me an idea on how to play my character for example, in the sixties they would dance crazy and feel free whilst dancing. I would need that encouragement in “the Rhythm of life” to be wild and go full out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTh406JSLPg
