The term indie rock came from ‘ INDEPENDENT’ describes the small & relatively low budget labels on which it’s released and do it yourself attitude of the bands and artists. As grudge , punk and Britpop bands in the UK, broke mainstream in 1990s used to identify acts that are outsiders and underground.

Are Alternative & Indie Rock the same? Yes in a way both indie and alternative are Interchangeable. Are 'Alternative' and 'Indie' essentially interchangeable terms? Yes ,The only difference used to be about location . Alternative was the preferred American term, Indie was the favoured British term. Indie is, at heart, the English expression. In the UK, indie started out, simply, as the trade term for records released on independent record-labels. NIRVANA {Alternative} 1975 {Indie} Artic Monkeys {Indie}

About the history of Hip-hop & R&b  is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.[2] It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and graffiti writing Contemporary R&B known as simply R&B, is a music genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance. Although the abbreviation "R&B" originates from traditional rhythm and blues music, today the term R&B is most often[by whom?] used to describe a style of African-American music originating after the decline of funk and disco in the 1980s. Some sources refer to the style as urban contemporary (the name of the radio format that plays hip hop and contemporary R&B). Contemporary R&B has a polished record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel (mostly common in contemporary R&B songs prior to the year 1995), and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. Electronic influences are becoming an increasing trend, and the use of hip hop or dance-inspired beats are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may be reduced and smoothed out. Contemporary R&B vocalists are often known for their use of melisma, popularized by vocalists such as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder,[1] Whitney Houston,[1][2][3] and Mariah Carey.[
