Presentation transcript:

The Age of Ignorance Muhammad grew up in a period of great corruption, when the Arabs worshipped many idols in the ancient temple of Makkah, known as the Ka’ba. This period in history is known to Muslims as the Age of Ignorance This is because most people at this time were ignorant of the fact that there was only one God. Instead they believed in many different Gods. The Hanifs At this time though some people did not really believe that there were lots of Gods and regarded worship of idols as superstition. They believed that there was only one God who created the universe. These men were called Hanifs and they often spent a lot of time praying alone in the hills or meditating Muhammad was one of these Hanifs and while he was meditating – the one and only God spoke to him in a revelation.

‘Night of Power’ ‘Lailat ul Qadr ‘In the name of your Lord who created all humanity, speak these words out loud! Your Lord is the most generous one. – He who has taught the pen and taught humans what they did not know. (Surah 96:1-5) ‘O people, your Companion is not one possessed. He saw him (Gabriel) without any doubt in the clear horizon. He keeps nothing back of what was revealed to him: it is not the word of an evil spirit. (Surah 81: 22-25) ‘By the star when it sets! Your fellow man (Muhammad) is not making a mistake and he has not been misled. He is not speaking from mere impulse. The Qur’an is nothing less than that which was revealed to him. One mighty in power showed it to him, one full of wisdom. He revealed to His servant what he revealed. The servant did not make false in his heart anything that he saw (Surah 43:1-11)
