Maths Workshop Monday 21st September Multiplication and Division Year 1-2 This is an edited version of the workshop to make it more user-friendly when looking at home.

Parents in partnership = progress + positivity Why am I even here? Parents in partnership = progress + positivity We can but dream of a scene like this!

What’s the plan? What your child will be learning in class and how A few more practical ideas in supporting your child at home Feedback

In the Classroom In this session we will use pages 38-43 and 51-56 from our calculations policy. A link for this is on the Parents’ Meeting Resources page or the curriculum page on our website. This clearly breaks down the teaching of multiplication and division in our school.

What your child will be learning in class From the concrete to visual representation

What your child will be learning in class Different representations using manipulatives video

What your child will be learning in class Moving to working horizontally. Note no vertical working. Multiplication as repeated addition

What your child will be learning in class From the concrete to the visual representation

What your child will be learning in class Division - Sharing or grouping?

What your child will be learning in class From the concrete….. Using a marked numberline and number rods 18 ÷ 3

What your child will be learning in class …to the visual representation….. Using jumps on a numberline

Supporting your child at home Play games Homework – Praise. Don’t panic! Ask your child to explain everything

Supporting your child at home Multiplication War (for 2 players) Take out the picture cards, then deal half the deck to each of the players then place them face down in front of you Turn over the top card of your piles at the same time The first to say the correct multiplication wins both cards. The winner is the first to win both cards

Supporting your child at home Pile it on (for 2 or more players) On a player's turn, they roll the die twice. Their first roll indicates how many piles they must make. Their second roll tells how many cards to place face down in each pile The player will then create those piles, add up the number of cards used (either by counting them or by using multiplication), and record their score. Play for ten rounds. The person who uses the most cards total is the winner.

Supporting your child at home Card games and counting games (e.g. Snakes & Ladders, Ludo and any dice games) Recognising numbers and sequences when out and about (e.g. house numbers-odds and evens, bus numbers, car number plates etc.) Recognising shapes (e.g. buildings, windows, food packaging etc.) Helping in the kitchen (e.g. weighing ingredients, time duration, volume of liquids etc.)

Supporting your child at home Helping in the supermarket (e.g. paying and change, weighed fruit and vegetables, calculating better value etc.) CDs/Games for learning times tables Take and compare measurements when DIY shopping (e.g. measuring spaces for curtains, furniture, wall paper etc.) Tell the time/use timetables (e.g. bus times Sky TV guide)

Parents in partnership = progress + positivity Am I satisfied? Parents in partnership = progress + positivity We very much value your feedback. If you could spare a moment to answer the questionnaire on the ‘parents meeting resources’ page of our website, we would be most grateful. All answers are anonymous and will be used to ensure all future workshops are tailored to your specific needs.
