Quality monitoring work NSHCS / AHCS Outcomes and next steps

Our initial findings Our plans for tracking trainees Our plans for visits

Dept. self assessments 117 centres currently have ‘active’ trainees 60 self assessment returns so far with supporting evidence Specialty leads are currently assessing evidence to ensure it meets standard Continued refinement of the process envisaged in response to feedback from users Designed to be a collaborative process

STP approval visits 2016, Follow-up visits for departments hosting STP trainees Designed to assist improvement. Fulfils HCPC / AHCS monitoring requirement. Mirrors National School Process: uniformity for UK STPs

New National Training Numbers database Why do we need this?

Existing NTNs

Problems with existing system Not easily navigated No trainee/trainer access Relies on service contacting NES staff with any changes and NES staff updating the spreadsheet (Not “current”)

NES Developed “TURAS”

“TURAS” Online training tracker TURAS is Gaelic and means “journey” Database designed to chart the trainee’s journey throughout their training. Will incorporate training department, stage of training, rotations, special measures/events (e.g. Out of programme) Will use current, NES issued, training numbers Generic architecture with HCS ‘skin’. Already used by medical, dental and pharmacy postgraduate trainees

TURAS

Editable by trainees/supervisors - so current

Clear and user friendly - Trainee timeline

Going forward We will, in future, align postgraduate funding support from NES with satisfactory placement monitoring outcomes. We will continue to share information about the state of quality management in Scotland with AHCS and NSHCS through a reciprocal agreement relating to STP trainees. We will continue to adapt the quality management process in collaboration with training centres and trainees. Quality management of certain undergraduate Practitioner groups (Physical and physiological sciences NHS employees).

Questions for the group We intend to limit future NES-support to departments participating in this quality monitoring scheme. Do you agree this is fair? We intend this QA process to be extended to NES supported NHS-employed Practitioner-level trainees. Do you agree this is fair? Is the role of the TURAS system in managing and tracking trainees clear?
