Pelagic Zone

Marine Lifestyle Plankton are the group of organisms that Marine life is incredibly diverse. Scientists use groups and subgroups based on common physical characteristics to discuss them. Three types of lifestyles include: Plankton are the group of organisms that exist adrift the ocean currents. ^ Neuston are those plankton that float at the surface ^ Example: Portuguese Man-of –War.

Marine Lifestyle cont. Nekton are the organisms that swim, from small vertebrates to large whales. Most of the seas’ predators are Nekton. The majority of Nekton are vertebrates.

Marine Lifestyle cont. Benthos are organisms that live on or in the bottom. They can move about or be sessile. Sessile organisms are attached to the sea floor.

Marine Lifestyle cont. Benthos are divided into three categories: Epifauna – are those animals, such as crabs, that live on the sea floor. Infauna – are organisms that are partially/completely buried (or attached) in the sea floor Most Infauna are either “deposit feeders” or “suspension feeders.” (Deposit feeders feed off detritus down from above. Suspension feeders filter particles (mostly plankton) suspended in the water for food.)

Aquarium Project You will be completing a Unit Project having you and your group present your idea for the best aquarium to your donators (peers). You will have to think about: what organisms you want, what types of technology will be needed to keep those organisms alive, how will it be kid friendly and educational, where will it be built, and how much it will cost to build/for admission, and any other information you find important. First, lets watch a video and discuss why you think aquariums are helpful to the marine environment.

Aquarium Design Preparation Zoos and aquariums are not only family fun but are also educational facilities designed to increase public awareness of the diversity of Earth's aquatic ecosystems. You are part of a project team for an aquarium that is being built in Maryland. Your task is to design, create, and maintain a controlled ecosystem for either freshwater, saltwater, or a brackish environment. Your team will create a plan of the proposed design with proper specifications and filtration system using the latest technologies. You will research indigenous flora and fauna of Maryland and have a variety of organisms that can be sustained in your aquarium. You will produce a technology presentation for prospective financial sponsors and members of the community. The presentation must include qualitative and quantitative information that explains the diversity displayed in your set-up for the new aquarium that will be opening soon.
