JGHS South Africa Project 2018 Project Expectations It’s a project, not a trip! The JGHS SA Project is just that: A project. It is not a 10 day trip but a year long project that involves a trip as part of it. Fundraising Pupils are expected to be involved in year long fundraising activities. Staff involved will support pupils but the initiative and work must be undertaken by pupils themselves. An aim of this project is to encourage pupils’ own initiative and build their teamwork, creative and organisational skills. Skills Some of the most valuable experiences when in SA are when pupils from each school work together on skills, interests and projects and share their cultures. It is vital that our pupils plan for and organise resources for these activities. Research Pupils are expected to have a knowledge and understanding of the history, issues and culture in SA. Particularly Zulu culture and Durban and Umlazi. The school will support this with speakers but pupils are expected to do their own background research.

JGHS South Africa Project 2018 Purpose of Fundraising Partnership. We pride ourselves on the emphasis on this being a partnership, with the main focus being on cultural and educational exchange. Lessons. Part of this involves preparing lesson resources and going over there ready to facilitate a learning exchange with pupils. Examples in the past have been: Music lessons, Gaelic/ Zulu language lessons, biology lessons, football games. Some money will contribute towards printing and providing resources for this. (more detail to follow in skills pupil meeting). Cultural exchange. In June 2017 we hosted 4 pupils and 2 teachers (from both secondary schools) in Edinburgh. Fundraising is used to cover activities during their stay. Local support. This depends on what the school wants at the time, and pupils help to allocate where the money goes once in South Africa. In the past it has been used for: soup kitchens, paint to decorate classrooms etc. Raising awareness. The more people that know about this project the more support is given. Community involvement is imperative for the longevity of the project.

JGHS South Africa Project 2018 Task What should we do for 2017-2017 to make this bigger and better? The more involved you and your child are, the more rewarding this experience will be! Key points for discussion: Raffle and auction contributions Events – what? When? How many? How do we raise the profile? Discuss initial ideas in groups and feedback.

JGHS South Africa Project 2018 Pupil Meetings To be held on the first Wednesday of every month (where possible) at lunch time. Attendance is imperative. Next pupil meeting: Wednesday 6th September Agenda: Fundraising Introduce Skills Subsequent pupil meeting: Wednesday 4th October Finalising skills and lessons

JGHS South Africa Project 2018 Other essentials (reminders) Passports: To be allowed through immigration your child’s passport must be valid for a full 6 months after their scheduled date of departure from SA. Immunisations: Your child must check with their own GP exactly what immunisations they require for travelling to Kwa-Zulu Natal in SA. Medical info: It is essential that we have an EE2 form for your child and thorough, up to date information on their physical and mental health before departing on the trip. Anything that may arise as an issue for your child must be disclosed to the trip leader and their ‘family’ leader. Insurance: Our school policy covers for any illness or accident on the trip but not for any issues arising from pre-existing conditions. You will need your own insurance policy for anything arising from a pre-existing condition.
