Benjamin Goodman Isaac Hawkins “The King of Swing”

Early Life Grew up in Chicago Illinois Raised in a poor family Received lessons in a local synagogue Family He had 11 siblings His father was killed when he was 15 This caused him to become the main income for his family

Career Beginnings Benny moved to Los Angeles after his father died He participated in the Ben Pollack band when he moved there He then moved to New York with the band a year later Benjamin left the band shortly after arriving in New York This allowed him to become a freelance musician

Historical Impact Benjamin Goodman is one of the most influential musicians in the swing era He was the one of the first band leaders to integrate his band in this era His skill enabled him to receive a Grammy
