Education & Outreach “E&O” Committee Update Presented by Maya Spark and Jonathan Elton August 2017 Detroit Meeting

Agenda Toronto to Detroit Update. Updated Committee Charter. Live Polling Context. EPA Taskforce Next Steps Post Board Review. Mike – MIT Partnership Opportunity. Live Polling.

Toronto to Detroit Established new committee with more members. Reviewed and reconfirmed committee charter. Reached out to selected interested member companies to create the EPA Taskforce. Committee meetings to discuss strategy and put together polling questions to give direction. Polling agreed with Arcadis.

The Updated Committee Charter Educating, engaging and partnering with internal and external stakeholders to the opportunities and challenges of beneficially reusing surplus land.

EPA Taskforce Next Steps Sought input from selected interested members. Proposed sub committee ad funding to the SPR Board. Board approved US$10,000 for a consultant to co-ordinate and advocate on issues relating to Todd Davis’ whitepaper. Taskforce will now be established as a sub-committee of E&O.

Potential SPR – MIT Partnership Opportunities Background: ExxonMobil sponsored a seminar at MIT in conjunction with the Department of Urban Studies and Planning called “Shrinking Cities” Objective was to find creative reuse for industrial sites in economically disadvantaged locations The seminar ran for 3 years and involved case studies and student research Consistent with SPR charter to explore educational opportunities, reestablish this connection and if successful pursue other university partnerships Proposal: SPR to maintain a list of interested Member or Association Sponsor “volunteers” who would be available for: Participating in panel discussions at the MIT campus or in Webinar/call-in format Assisting in the development of material for seminars Being interviewed for research projects Providing guidance to students interested in pursuing projects or papers.
