CAS - The Future Citizen The Internet of Things CAS - The Future Citizen

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)? Play until 2:07

The Internet of Things If this then do this Is about connecting things in your life and letting them speak to each other If this then do this If the ‘sensor’ in one device finds something then do this. The sensor could be anything: temp, sound, movement, direction and so on

Examples If my watch says that my heart beat is greater than 100 beats per minute buzz my watch to tell me to be careful If my garage door opens then let me know If my dog gets further than 100 metres away from the house then let me know his location If my fridge is getting low on milk then order more milk from supermarket (how would this work)

Let your imagination wander What ‘If this thens’ can you think of?

Retail What do you think that technology added to the shopping experience for people that use his wife’s shop? What did technology add to the shop?

The fridge A fridge records the barcodes of everything that you put in and take from it. It records what you have consumed and sends this information through the Internet to a supermarket so that it will automatically order new stock for you. This is a free new service from the supermarket. Why is it free?

The fridge problem Part of the Terms and Conditions of this new service is that the supermarket ‘own’ the data and can share it with others. Who would they share it with? How would they use this data?

Does the Internet of Things threaten our privacy? Your grandfather who is always saying ‘It was never like that in my day’ needs to be persuaded that he should always wear the GPS tag that you have just brought him. You need to tell him about how it works, what data it collects, who has access to the data and construct a solid argument to make him wear it. Discuss and come up with three killer statements.

Quick Vote The Internet of Things Good Bad Don’t Know What concerns do you have? Is it going to happen anyway?
