The SAT and Act

The Stats about the SAT and ACT 1. A record 1.7 million students from the class of 2015 took the SAT. 1.9 million students took the ACT in 2015. 2. Many New York City families will spend over $20,000 on SAT prep and top tutors charge over $600 an hour. 3. More than 350,000  low-income students (21% of all test takers) obtained SAT fee waivers so they could take the test for free.  4. Forty four percent of test takers in the class of 2011 were minority students, which it the most diverse group of test takers 5. The average mean score for the Act the past five years was a 21 6. While 61.3 percent of Asian students and 52.8 percent of white students in this year’s class met the college-readiness benchmarks on the SAT, just 16.1 percent of black students, 22.7 percent of Hispanic test-takers, and 32.7 percent of Native Americans did

Reasons why to get rid of the Sat and act It isn’t the best way at determining if someone is smart or not to get into a college because it only tests on certain skills a student has. The student’s GPA should be weighted more and should speak for it’s self in determining if a student is smart or not. The cost of test preparation for the sat and act are too expensive which some students that have lower socioeconomic status wont be able to have which puts them at a disadvantage. Students that live in lower socioeconomic areas don’t get the necessary class rigor as other students who live in higher socioeconomic areas, which puts them at disadvantage. It hurts the students that don’t do well on tests. It puts too much stress on highschool students as 16 and 17 year olds because this test is fate of your college future.

Ways to fix the problem Eliminate the SAT and ACT!!! Come up with a new way at measuring students skills. New test that could measure all aspects of a students skills. Essentially an aptitude test. That shows your strengths and weakness.
