ALLITERATION The repetition of the sound at the beginning of a word. ‘Gregory’s gorilla growled gleefully.’ Can YOU think of an example of alliteration?

CONTEXT Something outside the text that could affect its meaning. This could be historical context, or social context. If a poem was written during a war for example.

IMAGERY Words that are so descriptive that they create a picture in the reader’s mind. ‘The snow was a sleek blanket, laid delicately over the landscape.’ Can YOU think of an example of imagery?

METAPHOR An image created by referring to something as something else. ‘My brother is a pig.’ Can YOU think of an example of a metaphor?

ONOMATOPOEIA Words that sound like their meaning. ‘Smash, crash, bang, pop, pow.’ Can YOU think of an example of onomatopoeia?

OXYMORON Two words positioned together that have contrasting ideas. ‘ The living dead.’ Can YOU think of an example of an oxymoron?

PERSONIFICATION Giving an object human qualities. ‘The pencil had decided it was not happy.’ Can YOU think of an example of personification?

SIMILE A comparison between two things, using ‘like’ or ‘as.’ ‘my sister was as big as a house.’ ‘Miserable like the rain.’ Can YOU think of an example of a simile?

QUOTATION A piece of writing exactly as it was written in the story or poem. It must not be changed in any way. Have you used a quotation within your work today to justify your ideas?

HYPERBOLE An exaggeration of the truth for effect. ‘I’ve told you a THOUSAND TIMES!’ Can YOU think of an example of hyperbole?

PATHETIC FALLACY When the weather reflects the mood of the speaker or the tone of the writing. What weather would you expect to see in a horror story?

CONNOTATION The associations that we make with a word or phrase. What does the word ‘slither’ make you think of? What other words do you associate with the word?

GENRE Genre is the category that a story, film, piece of music or poem falls into depending on what it is about. Different genres include horror, gothic, romance or drama. Can you think of any other genres?

FORESHADOWING Foreshadowing is where the author hints or warns the reader of something that will happen at a later point. Can you think of a film, or book where you have been given hints beforehand of what will happen later on?

JUXTAPOSITION A juxtaposition is where two ideas are put close together to show a clear contrast. Why is this picture a good example of a juxtaposition?

REPETITION When the same word or phrase is repeated within a piece of writing. Can you think of an example of repetition within a piece of writing?

VOICE/SPEAKER The person that is speaking within a poem or story. If it is not the character himself speaking, then this is a THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE. Who is the speaker in the book that you are currently reading?

TONE The tone is the emotion or atmosphere that a piece of writing creates. ‘He stood, broken as shattered glass as she walked away and left him, alone.’ What would you say the tone of the writing is?

FIGURATIVE/LITERAL When something is literal, it means exactly what it says. When something is figurative, it is an altered or exaggerated version. ‘I lost my mind.’ How could you interpret this sentence literally, or figuratively??

SYMBOLISM When an idea or object symbolises something, this refers to the common associations we make with items. Eggs symbolise Easter, lambs symbolise Spring. Can YOU think of an example of symbolism?

RHYME/RHYTHM Words that sound the same have a rhyme. The use of rhyming words to give a poem a beat creates a rhythm. Reading a poem aloud helps to discover its rhythm. Can you find a rhythm within a piece of writing that you have read?
