95. OXYMORON & ONOMATOPOEIA “Oxymoron is a figure of speech where two contradictory terms appear in conjunction. Onomatopoeia is the creation of a word from the sound it makes.

Onomatopoeia is important because it is a word created from imitation for rhetorical, dramatic, or poetic effect.

Oxymoron is important because it joins two opposing words and creates a statement or expression; the new word illustrates a thing.

Rhetorical Figure of Speech: Oxymoron Oxymorons are two contradictory terms joined together to make one word. Oxymorons are found in everyday language and often add humor to a frustrating situation. Fine Mess Seriously Funny Living Dead Minor Crisis Original Copies Pretty Ugly

Rhetoric Example: Oxymoron in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo says: “O brawling love! O loving hate! O anything of nothing first create! O heavy lightness, serious vanity! Misshapen chaos of well seeming form. Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health.” Shakespeare’s Romeo uses oxymorons throughout the play. This shows that he is conflicted inside and torn between two worlds.

Rhetorical Figure of Speech: Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is a word spelled as it is spoken out loud. Onomatopoeia may look silly but in a poem it can be very humorous and fun to write. Click Zip! Moo Belch Quack Crunch Chatter Purr

Onomatopoeia Example: Listen by Margaret Hillert Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Frozen snow and brittle ice Make a winter sound that’s nice Underneath my stamping feet And the cars along the street.

Onomatopoeia Example: Mom and Dad Are Home Slam! Slam! Go the car doors. Jangle! Jangle! Go the house keys. Jiggle! Jiggle! Go the keys in the door. Squeak! Goes the front door! Thump! Thump! That is me running down the stairs. Guess what? Mom and Dad are home!!

Onomatopoeia is fun to say. What are some other examples you can make? What are some oxymorons you know? List them. BRAINSTORM
