From Spanish to Mexican Mexican Nationalism From Spanish to Mexican

A. Distance Causes Problems 1. Adventurers from the U.S. (Filibusters) worried the Spanish government. -Thought they were spies.

A. Distance Causes Problems 2. Spaniards, who were far removed from Spain. The King lived too far away. ~Began calling themselves Mexicans

A. Distance Causes Problems 3. Filibusters crossed the border & caused problems ~King was too far away to stop them!

B. Battle of Medina 1. The Leader of the Mexican Republican Army, Jose Gutierrez de Lara, set out to fight against the distant Spanish rule.

B. Battle of Medina 2. Gutierrez and his men joined with U.S. army officer Augustus Magee. Gutierrez-Magee Expedition looking to start a revolution.

B. Battle of Medina 3. After marching across much of Texas and Northern Mexico they met the Spanish Royalist Army ~the Battle of Medina August 18, 1813

B. Battle of Medina 4. Gutierrez and the Republican Army lost, however, this battle made others want to fight for Mexican Independence.

B. Battle of Medina 5. In 1821 Mexico would be granted its independence from Spain. ~Too expensive and far away for Spain to fight for the land

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 1. The new country called itself the United Mexican States.

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 2. It created its own constitution ~ the Mexican Federal Constitution of 1824, written by Erasmo Seguin (Modeled after U.S.)

C. Mexico Becomes Independent 3. This constitution created the joint State of Coahuilia y Tejas. ~Tejas was not its own state because the population was too small
