“I Am the Door of the Sheep” “I Am the Good Shepherd”

The Setting (John 9:1-41) Jesus had healed “a man who was blind from birth” (9:1) Naturally, this man became a believer (9:11, 15, 17, 25, 27, 30-33) The Pharisees cast him out of the synagogue (9:34, 22) Jesus found the man and encouraged him (9:35-39) The Pharisees continued to press Jesus and continued to reject Him (9:40-41) Jesus spoke a parable: To encourage the man, who was now a believer To impress upon the Pharisees who He really was To contrast Himself with the harsh and heartless false teachers

The Saying (John 10:1-29) The Parable of the Sheepfold (10:1-6) Sheepfolds were common in that day Shepherds were a well-known figure in that day Jesus told this parable to contrast Himself with the false teachers The Pharisees did not understand (10:6)

The Saying (John 10:1-29) “I Am the Door of the Sheep” (10:7-10) Jesus contrasts Himself with the Pharisees (10:8, 10) The Pharisees are described as “thieves and robbers” (10:8, 1) They are selfishly motivated (10:10) Jesus was not afraid to rebuke false teachers (cf. Matt. 23; 3:7) False teachers, like sheep thieves, will kill and destroy (10:10) Jesus calls Himself, “The door of the sheep” (10:7, 9) The door is the opening where sheep went in and out A good shepherd would block the door with his body Jesus is the door of salvation (10:9-10)

The Saying (John 10:1-29) “I Am the Good Shepherd” (10:11-18, 25-29) The Old Testament pictured the Lord as a shepherd (Isa. 40:10-11) The New Testament portrays His shepherd qualities (John 10:15; Heb. 13:20; 1 Pet. 5:4; 1 Pet. 2:21-25) Jesus contrasts Himself with the Pharisees (10:11-13) Jesus is “The Good Shepherd” (10:11-18, 25-29) He Died for His sheep (10:11, 15, 17-18; cf. Rom. 5:6-8) He Knows His sheep (10:14; cf. 2 Tim. 2:19; 1 Pet. 3:12) He Cares for His Sheep (10:12-13; cf. Heb. 7:25) He Gathers His Sheep (10:16; cf. Matt. 28:19; John 12:32) He Calls His Sheep (10:27, 5; cf. 2 Thess. 2:14) He Protects His Sheep (10:28-29; cf. Matt. 28:20) He Saves His Sheep Eternally (10:28; cf. Matt. 25:31-46)

The Significance There is one fold (10:16) The sheepfold is a figure of the church (Acts 20:28+1 Pet. 5:2) There is one church/flock (Eph. 4:4; John 10:16) Jews & Gentiles were brought into one fold (Eph. 2:11-22) There is one Shepherd (10:16) He is the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls (1 Pet. 2:25) We must hear His voice (Matt. 7:24-27) We must follow His teaching (Heb. 5:9) We must follow His example (1 Pet. 2:21)

The Significance There is one door (10:2, 9) The church/fold has only one door – Christ (Gal. 3:27; 1 Cor. 12:13) Salvation has only one door – Christ (Acts 4:12; Eph. 1:3; John 14:6; 2 Tim. 2:10) Jesus offers entrance to “anyone” (cf. Matt. 11:28-30; Rev. 22:17) Some still reacted against Jesus and there was division (10:19-21) False prophets lead people to destruction (Matt. 7:15-19) False shepherds draw away disciples after them (Acts 20:29-32) Hirelings serve for selfish gain (John 10:12; Ezek. 34)
