Latitude and Longitude

What is Latitude and Longitude????

Latitude and Longitude are a system of imaginary lines drawn on the earth’s surface that are used to located any place on the Earth. Longitude Latitude

In what theme does latitude and longitude belong?? Latitude and longitude are a part of the Geography in the 5 themes of Social Studies

But what is Latitude?

Latitude Latitude lines measure the distance North or South of the equator. The lines run parallel to the equator.

Where is 0 degree? Equator The equator is 0 degree latitude. It is an imaginary belt that runs halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. Equator

Three Rules of Latitude Start at the Equator. Decide if you need to go North or South. How many degrees do you need to move?

How to Remember Latitude Latitude lines go around the earth. Latitude lines are flat add flat in front of latitude to get flatitude. Hold your hands out from side to slide and those are latitude lines.

But what about Longitude??

Longitude Longitude is the measure of distance East or West of the prime meridian. Longitude lines run east and west from the poles.

P R I M E D A N Where is 0 degree? The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, western Africa, and Antarctica.

Three Rules of Longitude Start at the Prime Meridian. Decide if you need to move West or East. How many degrees do you need to move?

How to Remember Longitude Longitude lines go over the earth. Hold one hand up above your head and the other down beside your body and these are longitude lines.

How to write Latitude and Longitude Examples Latitude: 35ºN 10ºS Longitude: 170ºW 20ºE Written together: 40ºN, 70ºW Latitude is always written first. Latitude and longitude is written in degrees. Latitude includes either N or S after the degree symbol. Longitude includes either W or E after the degree symbol.

Now Lets Practice: Lets Start with LATITUDE

Latitude Find the latitude of the star. Equator N Answer: 30º S

Latitude Again Find the latitude of the star. Equator N Answer: 60º N

Latitude Again Find the latitude of the star. Equator Answer: 50°N

Now lets practice Longitude

Longitude Find the longitude of the star. Answer: 90ºE Prime Meridian

Longitude Again Find the longitude of the star. Prime Meridian Answer: 60º W

Longitude Again Find the longitude of the star. Prime Meridian Answer: 35º W

Now Put Latitude and Longitude TOGETHER

Find the latitude and longitude of the star. Equator N Prime Meridian Answer: 30º S, 30º E

Find the latitude and longitude of the star. Equator N Prime Meridian Answer: 60ºN, 120ºE

Find the latitude and longitude of the star. Equator Prime Meridian Answer: 65ºS, 110ºE

One more time N Answer: 60ºS, 90ºW

GREAT JOB!
