WHO IS WFPS? WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS The Western Federation of Professional Surveyors (WFPS) is an association comprised of the 13 western states professional land surveyors associations. The states include: Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado. WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

WHO IS WFPS? MEMBERSHIP DUES DELEGATES BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS If you are a member of the Idaho society then you are a member of WFPS No Dues – funding is generated from joint conferences Each of the thirteen states may send two delegates to represent their state association as a collective regional voice The delegates elect an executive board that serve two year terms in the following positions; Chairman, Chair-elect, Secretary/Treasurer. In addition, Dorothy Calegari has been appointed by the board to serve as Executive Director. The organization meets three times each year in alternating western state locations. Delegates are responsible for their travel, meals and lodging. WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

WHEN WAS WFPS ESTABLISHED? Conceived in 1979 at Lake Tahoe, Nevada to establish a western regional voice. First meeting January 12, 1980 in Reno, Nevada where the Articles of Incorporation were adopted by 12 western states and with this the Western Federation of Professional Land Surveyors (WFPLS) was established. October 1987 WFPLS changed its name to Western Federation of Professional Surveyors (WFPS). In 1991, Hawaii was added as the 13th WFPS state. WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

WHAT IS WFPS? MISSION : The Western Federation of Professional Surveyors is a conduit for interstate communication and provides resources to its member associations. WFPS advances the profession of surveying by fostering common goals and relationships within the western states, promoting public awareness of the profession, supporting education, and providing a regional voice. In 2014 WFPS had a strategic planning meeting to revisit the mission statement and this has been proposed for adoption this weekend. WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

WHY WFPS? Improving the national, regional and local image of the Professional Land Surveyor as a professional dedicated to serving the public. Conducting a public relations program to increase public awareness of the Professional Land Surveyor and his/her services. Maintaining active legislative involvement at the national and local level to achieve regional coordination and assistance in legislative matters that concern the profession. In addition to the mission the group refined the purpose and developed the following bullet points to guide the group. WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

WHY WFPS? Providing regional communication by soliciting information from each member society and communicating said information to all members and others. Developing and maintaining recommendations for educational standards for the profession. Developing programs which will provide professional development activities. Cooperating with other regional, national and international professional societies dedicated to serving the profession. State reports provide a mechanism to hear the issues other states our having. Many state publish they reports in their state journals to share with their memebership. Importance of have representation at the local, state, regional, and national level WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

What WFPS has accomplished: Provided letters of support and assistance to NSPS for national issues including; railroad abandonment, NAFTA, Model Law, and NSPS reorganization. Provided speakers at member states conferences Provided testimony and support to various WFPS states with regards to changes of statutes and rules overseen by the various western states’ Boards of Registration Reviewed and commented on NCEES test questions and testing methodology Sponsored or Co-Sponsored Biennial Conferences in our thirteen WFPS states 1979 to 2013 Written letters in support of national programs. Offered advice to NSPS during the recent reorganization. NSPS generally send the president or executive director to WFPS meetings. In recent years speakers have been provided at this conference, Utah, and Hawaii Most recently WFPS drafted a letter at the request of Idaho in support of organizations, and Colorado WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

What WFPS has accomplished: SCHOLARSHIPS: From 1992 to present, WFPS has awarded a total of $72,500 in scholarships to students enrolled in a four year college program, working toward a degree in land surveying. Teaching with Spatial Technology (TwiST) working with NCEES matching funds and the thirteen WFPS states, we have expanded a successful program from the state of Washington that provides surveying related knowledge to elementary school teachers who will then inspire young students to consider a surveying related career. This year alone, we will be sponsoring about 24 teachers with a total program budget of up to $50,000. WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

What WFPS has accomplished: TEACHING WITH SPATIAL TECHNOLOGY (TwiST) 2001 NEW YORK LSAW, PLSO, and Oregon Institute of Technology WFPS – Dick Smith and Carla Meritt June 22-26, 2015 Clark College in Vancouver, WA Conference on Remote Sensing created the program in Albany, New York Concept is to “imbed” teachers with the understanding of our profession. The program teaches teachers about GIS and GPS in a practical hands on approach, and canned lesson plans they can use to expose kids to surveying. Geared toward middle and high school kids. It is a great blend with the NSPS Trig-Star program. A number of states work the two programs hand in hand. California send the winning teacher to the event. OIT (Tim Kent) brought the curriculum out west, along with PLSO and LSAW Westfed broadened the base and now most of the WFPS state are sending teachers each year to the program This year is June 22-26 WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS

WESTERN FEDERATION OF PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS That is the who what when, where for wfps. Personal perspective – WFPS has benefiting me with a broader network of surveyors. If I have a question or one of the other delegates has a question about how we practice our profession we can easily share the info. Our state organization has benefited its participation in WFPS based on the open dialog delegates have with neighboring states for issues such as joint conferences, and seminars.
