Background The BWM Convention is the global standards on ballast water management The Adriatic Sea unique and highly sensitive environment an important waterway

Aims of the Strategy To provide a regional framework To enhance regional cooperation and capacity building in BWM matters To ensure protection and conservation of the Adriatic marine environment To encourage the effective implementation of the BWM System

Guiding principles: Tools and Measures Establishment of adequate institutional communication channels Improvement of institutional capacities and response capabilities Development and implementation of programs leading to identification and protection of sensitive areas and activities Compliance monitoring, enforcement programs and activities developed through BALMAS Project Increased public awareness

Goal 1: Pre-conditions for an Effective Implementation of the BWM Convention, 2004 Suitable national legal frameworks Institutional arrangements and communication Availability of resources

Goal 2: Harmonized Implementation of Measures and Procedures through the use of BALMAS BWM Tools Harmonized monitoring procedures and warnings Harmonized ballast water reporting Harmonized compliance monitoring and enforcement procedures Improving reception options for Adriatic ports Permanent Adriatic consultation on additional measures

Goal 3: Implementation of the BWM on Ships Flying the Flags of Partner Countries Knowledge exchange Measures to support implementation on ships

Goal 4: Addressing Intra-Adriatic Trade through custom-designed solutions Risk-assessments Sediment management
