aLMo from GME and IFS boundary conditions: A comparison Marco Arpagaus & Francis Schubiger COSMO WG4/WG5 workshop, 26.-28. May 2003

GME vs IFS: an example (forecast of 7.3.2003 00 UTC) aLMo with GME aLMo with IFS COSMO WG4/WG5 workshop, May 2003 Marco.Arpagaus@MeteoSwiss.ch 24h precipitation sum (+24..+48h)

GME vs IFS: Subjective verification by forecasters COSMO WG4/WG5 workshop, May 2003 Marco.Arpagaus@MeteoSwiss.ch

Configuration Model configuration used: aLMo; March – May 2003 GME/OPR: GME boundary conditions, both for the assimilation cycle and the forecast run. IFS: IFS boundary conditions, both for the assimilation cycle and the forecast run. Frames for lateral boundary conditions, full IFS for surface fields (snow cover from LM-DWD); no upper boundary. Bugs for IFS runs: Soil moisture a factor of 1000 too small (INT2LM). Surface fields from frames (?!) rather than full IFS. Different LM versions (GME: 2.17 / 3.2; IFS: 2.19 / 3.2). Precipitation for March/April: daily cycle COSMO WG4/WG5 workshop, May 2003 Marco.Arpagaus@MeteoSwiss.ch ANETZ OPR IFS LM-DWD

Summary IFS results for mean error unclear due to (massive) bugs in the experimental setup. Upper Air and precipitation: Clear improvement of IFS runs as compared to GME runs concerning day-to-day variations of the errors, i.e., the STD. Subjective verification shows clear improvement of IFS as compared to GME (precipitation only), despite the major bugs … New verification as soon as some statistics has been acquired with a hopefully bug-free IFS setup … COSMO WG4/WG5 workshop, May 2003 Marco.Arpagaus@MeteoSwiss.ch
