Adults are Different: Meeting the needs of Adult Learners Amy Walker, IU4 Mentor Lori Ceremuga, IU27 Mentor Charley Territto, Regional Mentor Coordinator, Western Region

ESSA Definition  “The term ‘professional development’ means activities that … are sustained (not stand-alone, 1-day, or short-term workshops), intensive, collaborative, job-embedded, data-driven, and classroom focused.” (S. 1177, Section 8002, page 295, paragraph 42)

Hybrid Learning Model Three stations: Independent learning (androgogy theory) Collaborative learning (develop a PD plan that meets the needs of adult learners) Direct instruction (strategies and techniques to meet the needs of adult learners)

Please Do Now Think about the most valuable skill you learned as an adult in a formal learning environment (golf lessons - music lessons - financial planning session - continuing education class – parenting class – dog obedience training) Describe the ELEMENTS that contributed to the success of that learning experience

Characteristics of Adult Learners 3-2-1 Highlight 3 things that are SIMILAR to the elements you described in your “do now” Underline 2 things that you tend to focus on when you plan a PD session Pose 1 question about the text

Talk to someone at a different table and share your thinking
