Finding work experience and internships Vanessa Freeman SBM Careers Consultant

After this session you will Understand key employment sectors Understand the appropriate levels of job to apply for Know more than 3 ways of finding a job and where to find vacancies. Have some ideas for next year

What do you hope to get from an internship?

Planning for an internship Start looking for summer internships early Check your Clutter Get a mentor – QMentors, One Million mentors, ELBA Have something to offer Take an active role in a society Get commercially savvy – take part in our enterprise events SBM QConsult Careers Taster Schemes

How do I find a Job? Advertised vacancies – use different sites, specialist, QMUL Careers, general local ‘papers’ Social Media, LinkedIn, Twitter Speculative applications Word of Mouth, networks

What are the best place to look for advertised jobs? Sources – sector-specific websites, locally-focused job sites, QMUL Careers job pages. http://workinstartups.com/job-board/jobs/interns/ www.internwise.co.uk www.careers.qmul.ac.uk/jobs www.ratemyplacement.co.uk www.e4s.co.uk www.Linkedin.com https://jobs.theguardian.com/

Which sectors employ SBM students? Aim – to get students to think about the different job sectors – help with narrowing down job ads and also not being too narrow minded.

Speculative approaches Work well if you hear someone might be hiring Find a mentor and get introductions to their networks. (try to make approaches) Approach companies for a short burst of work-shadowing. Cold approaches can work and are more common in areas such as PR/start-ups

www.itowerhamlets.co.uk/local/investment-companies/

Making an approach I am a Queen Mary University alumna and gained a Law Degree LLB in 2009. I qualified as a Solicitor Advocate and I am now transitioning to become a Careers Consultant. I write to request a work placement within the Careers and Enterprise department.

No Internship – no problem Arrange some work-shadowing Part-time/casual work Where are the opportunities to gain experience? Develop Leadership Problem solving Creativity

Your turn Using your phone and some of the resources shown find One website advertising jobs in your sector of interest. One job that you want to apply for.

Action Turn to your neighbour and agree 3 achievable next steps. E.g. Research 3 local insurance companies and send them my CV Update my LinkedIn profile
