Role of the DEC Elected/appointed for a four year term Develop and monitor the District Improvement Plan Review and make public District performance reports (assessment, school reviews, surveys, etc.) Establish broad policies within the framework of provincial policy Hire and evaluate the Superintendent – our only employee Approve the annual District Expenditure Plan and submit to the Minister of Education – monitor the budget quarterly

Role of the DEC (continued) Approve major capital improvement projects and capital construction projects and submit annually to the Department of Education Initiate school establishment and closures Maintain linkages with PSSCs and the community (e.g., MLAs, municipalities) Have management, care and control of school property Chair is a member of the Provincial Council of DEC Chairs and attends Ministers Forum three times each year – meeting with other Chairs and Superintendents Act as a liaison to assigned PSSCs / Principals

Role of the DEC (continued) DEC members do not: Establish school curriculum or the calendar Develop provincial assessment or set standards Develop provincial budgets Hire teachers or staff Set bus stops/routes Intervene in daily operations of the District or schools

Advise the Principal on education and policy issues Work with the Principal to develop and monitor the School Improvement Plan Review the School Report Card results Participate in hiring and performance evaluations of Principal and Vice-Principal, at the request of the Superintendent Communicate with the DEC on PSSC matters Roles/Responsibilities

Respect other PSSC members roles Are honest and discreet in discussions Never disclose confidential information –understand and accept that the confidential nature of some school business may place limitations on the PSSC Are guided by the School Mission Statement Suggestions for Code of Conduct (cont.)

Encourage a positive atmosphere where individual contributions are valued Use appropriate communication channels when questions/concerns arise Declare any conflict of interest Suggestions for Code of Conduct (cont.)

On or after October 1 st each year: a CHAIR is appointed by the parent members a VICE CHAIR may also be appointed, to assume the duties of the Chair should s/he be unable to perform duties PSSC Officers
