Dilations Section 9.7. Dilation A dilation is a transformation that stretches or shrinks a figure to create a similar figure. A dilation is not an isometry.
Surface Area and Volume
Objectives Define and draw lines of symmetry Define and draw dilations.
All scale drawings must have a scale written on them. Scales are usually expressed as ratios. Normally for maps and buildings the ratio: Drawing length:

6.7.1 Perform Similarity Transformations.  Remember previous we talked about 3 types of CONGRUENCE transformations, in other words, the transformations.
 Two figures are similar if…  1.) Their corresponding angles are congruent  2.) The corresponding sides are PROPORTIONAL!!! 5 in A B C D 4 in 10 in.
 Ratio: is the comparison of two numbers by division  Ratio of two numbers can be shown like this; a to b, a:b, or a/b  Proportion: equation that says.

8.7 Dilations Geometry. Dilation:  A dilation is a transformation that produces an image that is the same shape as the original, but is a different size.
Similar Triangles Triangles that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. Corresponding angles are congruent. Meaning they have the same.
7-2 Similar Polygons Objectives Students will be able to:
 Two polygons are similar polygons if corresponding angles are congruent and if the lengths of corresponding sides are proportional.
6.3.1 Use similar Polygons Chapter 6: Similarity.
Enlargements and Similar figures. Enlargement When a shape is enlarged by a scale factor: a)all sides must be multiplied by the scale factor. b)All angles.
I can find missing lengths in similar figures and use similar figures when measuring indirectly.

Presentation transcript:

Similar figures are proportional Similarity The FRAME Routine is about… Identifying figures that are scaled enlargements or reductions of an original figure. Main idea Similar figures are proportional Essential details The side lengths of one figure are multiplied or divided by the same number to get the corresponding side lengths of a second figure. The number you are multiplying or dividing by is called the scale factor. Proportional relationships are created with the multiplication- division family of operations Corresponding angles are the same size. So What? (What’s important to understand about this?) Similarity is a concept of proportions used in the fields of photography, movie making, architecture, map making, dispensing medicine, and crime solving.
