Warm-Up Analyze the physical map and put a star where you believe that that best place for a civilization to be located. Finally, explain your answer in 3-4 sentences.

Tuesday, December 1st , 2015 Warm Up: Where did people live? Focus Question 1). How did geography influence Ancient Egypt Essential Question: How did geography influence how people lived, moved, and define regions? Warm Up: Where did people live? Game Plan: 1). Geography of Egypt 2). Influence on Life 3). Influence on Movement Homework: Work on ICER revisions (due next Monday) Objectives: I will: 1). Analyze physical maps of ancient Egypt 2). Explain how geography influenced where people lived and how they moved in ancient Egypt.

Important Geographic features Nile River- World’s longest river flows about 3,500 miles north to the Mediterranean Sea. Flooded yearly to fertilize the land so that farming could be done. Mediterranean Sea- Allowed for fishing and trade. Sinai Peninsula- Rocky, mountainous, and desert area that separates Egypt from the Middle East. Western and Eastern Deserts- Protect from East and West. Nile River Delta- area of fertile soil and minerals carried by water. This is deposited in the triangular shaped region

How did geography influence the way people lived? The location of where people lived: Most people lived in the Nile River Delta because that was where the most fertile soil was. Pause: Outline how fertile soil leads to a civilization.

How did Geography Influence how people Moved? Look at the following maps and considered how the geography allowed and restricted movement.

How did geography influence how people moved? Due to the deserts on the West and East, as well as the Sinai Peninsula, people could only enter Egypt from the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea connected Egypt to Rome, Greece, and Mesopotamia, which allowed for culture, technology, and goods to be easily traded among those four great civilizations. Just like the Tigris and the Euphrates, the Nile allowed for some travel, however, most people lived in a very small area of the Nile River Delta.

Quick Write What are of Egypt do most people live and how is that related to geography?

Wednesday, December 2nd , 2015 Warm Up: Objectives: Game Plan: Essential Question? Focus Question: What are the impacts of the Nile on Egyptian life and define regions? Essential Question: How did geography influence the way that people live, move, and define regions. Warm Up: Game Plan: 1). Read the “Farming Life” 2). Notes/Discussion on Egyptian Farming Season 3). Gifts of the Nile Notes 4). Designing the Gifts of the Nile Homework: Complete the Essential Question on the Notes Objectives: I will: 1). Explain the farming season in relation to the Nile River. 2). Identifyand explain the impact of geography on defining regions of Egypt.

Farming Life Activity Please read the article “The Farming Life” and use it to document and describe the three seasons of the Egyptian Farmer.

Seasons of the Nile The Nile flooded on a regular basis. There was a: FLOOD SEASON: It lasted from June-September. It was also called the INUNDATION. During this time, the farmers would provide a “work-tax” for the pharaoh. They would build things like the PYRAMIDS and roads. PLANTING SEASON It lasted from September-February when the flood waters would recede and the farmers would plant their crops like figs, watermelons, and grain. HARVEST SEASON It lasted from February to June, which is when fully grown crops were collected.

Name the 3 Egyptian Farming Seasons and Put them in order. Picture A Picture B Picture C

Gifts of the Nile The Nile provided many “gifts”. These are items that the Nile provided to the people. They are: FOOD: like FISH, WATERFOWL, PLANTS, ETC. WATER: for DRINKING and IRRIGATION TRANSPORTATION and TRAVEL SILT which is thick, FERTILE soil found on the BOTTOM of the river. It was left behind when the river FLOODS PAPYRUS: A REED found in the river. It was used to make PAPER

How did geography define regions? Regions in Egypt Upper Egypt vs. Lower Egypt Upper Egypt is located in southern Egypt. Think upper as in higher elevation. We know that it is higher because the Nile flows south to north. Lower Egypt is defined by the Nile River Delta. Lowest elevation.   Red Lands vs. Black Lands Black Lands- Area around the Nile River. This was called the “Black Land” because the fertile soil was black. Red Lands- Vast deserts. Called the red lands because it was deadly hot with burning sands.

Thursday, December 4th , 2015 Warm Up: Where did people live? Focus Question 1). Which area is better for settlement, Egypt or Mesopotamia? Essential Question: How did geography influence how people live, move, and define regions? Warm Up: Where did people live? Game Plan: 1). Review HW 2). The King of Upper Egypt wore a tall, ____white_________, pear-shaped crown. Lower Egypt was the northern part of Egypt. It was the area around the Nile River _____Delta____________________. It was called “lower” because it was at a _______lower___________________ elevation. The King of Lower Egypt wore a short, boxy, _____red_________ crown.
