Important Geographic features Nile River- World’s longest river flows about 3,500 miles north to the Mediterranean Sea. Flooded yearly to fertilize the land so that farming could be done. Mediterranean Sea- Allowed for fishing and trade. Sinai Peninsula- Rocky, mountainous, and desert area that separates Egypt from the Middle East. Western and Eastern Deserts- Protect from East and West. Nile River Delta- area of fertile soil and minerals carried by water. This is deposited in the triangular shaped region

How did geography influence how people moved? Due to the deserts on the West and East, as well as the Sinai Peninsula, people could only enter Egypt from the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea connected Egypt to Rome, Greece, and Mesopotamia, which allowed for culture, technology, and goods to be easily traded among those four great civilizations. Just like the Tigris and the Euphrates, the Nile allowed for some travel, however, most people lived in a very small area of the Nile River Delta.

Seasons of the Nile The Nile flooded on a regular basis. There was a: FLOOD SEASON: It lasted from June-September. It was also called the INUNDATION. During this time, the farmers would provide a “work-tax” for the pharaoh. They would build things like the PYRAMIDS and roads. PLANTING SEASON It lasted from September-February when the flood waters would recede and the farmers would plant their crops like figs, watermelons, and grain. HARVEST SEASON It lasted from February to June, which is when fully grown crops were collected.
