2017/2018 School Year Competition Student Action on Saskatoon Water Attitudes 2017/2018 School Year Competition

SDWF The Safe Drinking Water Foundation (SDWF) has been a registered charity since 1998. Since then we have been actively focused on water quality issues in Canada. Through providing information and creating educational kits for elementary and high school students, the SDWF has been focused on educating the leaders of tomorrow on the importance of water quality for all. If you would like more information, or are interested in ordering water kits from SDWF, please visit our website: www.safewater.org www.safewater.org

Student Action on Saskatoon Water Attitudes Investigating, educating, and reporting on a water issue in their community. Open to K-12 students across Saskatoon. The project must take place in Saskatoon. Prizes will be a water bottle filling station for your school and a commemorative plaque. Some applicants may also receive Operation Water Drop test kits for their class. Industrial Pollution www.safewater.org

What’s Next? Now that you’ve decided what Saskatoon water issue you want to investigate, what’s next? Using your survey data, come up with a plan of how to educate your community on the issue and create informational material to help you out. www.safewater.org

Questions? Industrial Pollution www.safewater.org

What does your data say? After completing your survey, develop a plan best suited to your baseline data. If most of your community does not know where their water comes from, you could focus efforts on that, as well as your project focus, to maximize the positive change in this criterion. Since you are trying to create a quantifiable positive change, inform your audience on what actions can create that change. For example, the amount of water that would be saved by limiting use of certain appliances. www.safewater.org

Education Remember to educate your community on the source of their drinking water. Be sure to ask people if they know where their water comes from in the first survey you send out. In your follow-up survey, after educating them about their water source, ask again if they know the source of their drinking water. Note the change in how many people knew before and after. www.safewater.org

Education Be sure that everyone you educate fills out your survey. Establishing your baseline data is important before educating your community because you can’t go back and do it afterwards. Keep track of everyone who takes the survey, get names or emails, so that you can be sure that they will complete your follow-up survey as well. www.safewater.org

Questions? Industrial Pollution www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? There are many different ways to reach out to your audience in a fun and informative way! Poster sessions Presentation Mail outs Videos www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? Understand your audience to come up with a strategy that will be the most interesting to them. Mostly students? Mostly parents? How will you be able to get the general community involved? www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? Poster Session A come and go event where you can interact with your audience individually. Have a number of posters that are attractive and informative People can have a look at all of the posters and ask questions to help understand the issue. Not a big time commitment for your audience. Make snacks available! Coffee, tea, cookies www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? Formal presentation A PowerPoint presentation or some kind of performance educating on your issue Specific information delivered Time commitment and on a rigid schedule People can ask questions after the presentation www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? Handing out brochures or other informational materials Leaflets for people to take home from school Can hang posters around school and community Less direct form of communication May be harder for your audience to ask questions Could be easily ignored or people forget they have it or lose it www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? An informational video You could make an entertaining and educational video to show your issue Show how actions can be taken to remedy the issue Could be shown at an assembly and to friends and family www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? If you hold an event, make sure that the participants fill out one of your surveys before they hear your information. This will contribute to your baseline data and increase your sample group! Afterwards, make sure they complete your follow-up survey to see how attitudes have changed. Keep track of who takes your survey. www.safewater.org

How can you get your message out? There are many different ways to educate your community. You want to decide which will work best for you and be the most effective. You may want to have some combination of strategies to reach different groups of people. www.safewater.org
