LO: To evaluate the reasons for different attitudes to abortion Starter: What is meant by the ‘sanctity of human life’ and what might someone who believes in this say about our lesson topic today?

An abortion is the medical process of ending a pregnancy so it does not result in the birth of a baby, also known as a termination? An abortion and a miscarriage are the same thing? Before 1967, all abortions in the UK were illegal? Abortions are always legal in the UK? Abortions are legal under 24 weeks in the UK under certain circumstances. A doctor or nurse does not have to help or carry out an abortion if they do not want to? An abortion can be carried out using medication or by having a surgical procedure? A doctor must agree to the abortion? An abortion can take place after 24 weeks if the woman’s life is in danger or if there is a substantial risk that the baby could be severely physically or mentally disabled? All abortions must be carried out in a hospital or specialist licensed clinic? In 2011, there were 91,000 abortions carried out in England and Wales?

In the UK, the _________ says that abortions cannot be carried out in the UK after _____________ of pregnancy except in extreme _____________________ (eg. risk of death to the mother). Words: disabled law decision 24 weeks mental two circumstances sacred children pregnancy abortion life pregnancy sacred decision abortion two life mental disabled children law 24 weeks circumstances
