Mandate of the Section To coordinate environment and natural resource management. Integrate environment concerns in all development projects ,sectors, and environment mainstreaming. To report on environment degradation activities and practices. To develop environment protection plans and strategies for sustainable exploitation of natural environment. To sensitize on environmental conservation policies, laws, and regulations. To initiate on the renewal and sustainable exploitation of the natural environment.

2016/17 planned projects/ activities Sensitization on sustainable use and management of natural resource. Solid waste management through sorting at the source and aerobic composting.

2016/17 planned projects/activities. Strengthening of the Local Environment Committees. Environment restoration and greening of Soroti Municipality. Training of political and technical leaders on environment mainstreaming. Conduct environmental inspection, EA, EIA and monitoring for all development projects.

2016/17 planned projects/activities Cleaning Soroti together campaigns. Purchase machinery and equipment for environment monitoring. Purchasing stationary. Commemorating world Environment Day. Community benefit plan.

2016/17 planned projects/activities Review of EIA, EAs and Environment management plans for development projects. Operations of Aminit composting Plant. De-gazettement of the central forest reserves. Purchase of Land for degazettment. Training of Technical staff. Environment and social appraisal for council development projects. Provision of waste bins and skips. Surveying and land titling of Aminit composting plant, Akisim green space, station road green space,

Constraints/Challenges Inadequate funding for the sector. Inadequate staffing. Inadequate environment monitoring equipments. ie camera, Poor community attitude towards environment conservation and management. No environment police assigned to Soroti Municipality. Loitering animals. Encroachment on protected areas. i.e. opiya roack, moruapesur rock and central forest reserves. Political interference on environment enforcement.

Achievements in Q1 2016 Community sensitized through meetings and one (1)radio talk shows. Environment and social management screening of all development projects. Operation of Aminit composting plant. Environment Inspection and monitoring on compliance conducted. Environment enforcement on noise pollution.

Future Plans/proposed activities Purchase of Incinerator for waste management. Provision of covered waste bins in all house holds ,institutions and road reserves. Formation and sensitization of local environment committees. Purchase of land for cemetery. Purchase of environment monitoring equipments like mini waste laboratory, camera, electromagnetic meter Establishment of a mini weather station. Improvement and maintain ace of green spaces Rain harvesting in all institutions. Recycling plant for polyether and plastics. Establishment of modern landfill for waste management. Provision of energy saving technology . Connection of Hydro Electric power in Aminit composting plant. Tree planting in all roads and green spaces. Extend the CDM community benefit plan to all wards. Provision of relevant environment policies, laws, and regulations to the public. Construction of public toilets on major road reserves. Surveying and titling of all green spaces. Establishment on nursery beds.
