How can I teach The skills? What are tournament rules? Math 24 The Game What is it? How do you play it? How can I teach The skills? What are tournament rules? I used the term children rather than student so this could be used by parents to help their child at home.

What is Math 24? An engaging card game Players use addition, subtraction, multiplication & division to find a “target” number (24)

How do you play? The basic game is for 4 players Players “win” cards by correctly stating the solution The solution contains three steps (addition, multiplication, subtraction, or division of the digits on the card) that equal 24 Each digit can only be used once

Players must “declare” their solution by touching the card with only two or three fingers.

2…4…3…9… 8 x 3 makes 24 9 divided by 3=3 2 times 4=8 Can you think of another solution?

Patterns to look for to get the target number 24 8 x 3 = 24 12 + 12=24 6 x 4 = 24 14 + 10 = 24 12 x 2 = 24 16 + 8 = 24 24 x 1 = 24 18 + 6 = 24 24/1= 24 25 – 1 = 24 48/2=24 26 – 2 = 24 96/4=24 27 – 3 = 24 120/5=24 28 – 5 = 24

Variations on patterns Other strategies involve finding a number that is “one greater” OR “LESS THAN” 24 & THEN SUBTRACTING OR ADDING ONE. Example: (numbers on card- 5,5,9,8) 25-1=24 5 x 5 = 25 9 – 8 = 1

(digits 5 & 6 are used as factors) Last step : 30-6=24 5 x 6 = 30 (digits 5 & 6 are used as factors) 5 + 1 = 6 (digits 5 & 1 are used as addends) The first student to touch the card must give the last step of the solution first! The last step is the pattern that makes 24.

Students at different levels of skill can play the game Students at different levels of skill can play the game. Easier cards are worth one point, hardest card solutions are worth 3 points. Medium level of difficulty are worth 2. Many cards have more than one solution! At the end of a round of play, players total the number of points they earned for the cards they won.

Variations on the game: There are many ways to introduce the skills Variations on the game: Cultivating basic skills Introducing strategies Finding multiple solutions for cards Bingo

Tournament Play Rules The 1st player to touch the card must announce the pattern within 3 seconds. The complete solution (all 3 steps) must be stated within 15 seconds. A player cannot change the pattern after stating it. A player may correct himself and change the 1st and 2nd steps of the solution until he “fixes” the solution by saying “equals, makes or is 24”.

Math 24 is fun, increases basic fact fluency, and encourages logical thinking skills.
