MFL mocks and revision

The exams – when? Listening (Spanish = Wed 6th Dec, French = Tues 12th Dec) Reading (Spanish = Wed 6th Dec, Speaking (Tues 28th or Wed 29th Nov) Writing (Fri 8th Dec)

The exams – what? Listening – all topics on the specification: Foundation – 35 minutes Higher – 45 minutes 5 minutes of reading time – to be used to read the paper, predict vocabulary, underline key words in the questions etc. You should be writing some key words on the paper during this time. Different types of questions – comprehension, gap fill multiple choice etc. Some questions in English, some in French/Spanish. Always answer the questions in the correct language.

The exams – what? Reading – all topics on the specification: Foundation – 45 minutes Higher – 60 minutes Different types of questions – comprehension, gap fill multiple choice etc. Some questions in English, some in French/Spanish. Always answer the questions in the correct language. Translation from French/Spanish into English. Once you have finished this, re-read it. If it doesn’t read right in English, tweak what you have written. Pay special attention to your choice of tense in English. Does it match any time expression that you have used?

The exams – what? Speaking – could be any topic on the specification: Foundation – 7-9 minutes Higher – 10-12 minutes Both have preparation time in which you need to prepare a role-play and a photo without the use of any notes or a dictionary. During this time, write down exactly what you intend to say. Try and predict your follow up two questions on the photo. Exam – i) role-play ii) photo iii) general conversation Remember – you must ask your teacher a question at some point in the general conversation

The exams – what? Writing – could be any topic(s) on the specification: Foundation – 60 minutes Higher – 75 minutes Foundation – sentences about a photo, 40 words on a topic, 90 words on a topic, translation into French/Spanish (sentence level) Higher – 90 words on a topic, 150 words on a different topic, translation into French/Spanish (paragraph) Think about what you know and how you can adapt that to the tasks. Do NOT think about what you’d like to say in English and then get stuck because you can’t write that in French/Spanish.

The exams – how to revise Complete your set homework thoroughly each week. Check it carefully once you’ve finished. Get 10,000 points on memrise each week. This will make you revise previous topics as well as current ones. Use kerboodle.com to revise readings, listenings and grammar tasks from previous topics (especially those from year 10) Attend the revision sessions with the FLAs – your specific times during am registration or Mon, Wed, Thurs lunch (room 6 for French) / Wed & Fri (wk A) and Wed-Fri (wk B) room 6 for Spanish. Test someone else in your form on their speaking (using their booklets) during am registration.

Remember: When learning a language and preparing for a language exam, a little and often works best. Start early and make your revision become a habit. Use your time effectively – do memrise on the bus, get tested during form time etc. Check all of your answers once you have fnished. Think about common mistakes that you have made in your exercise book, e.g. missing capital letters or accents - have you checked this in your writing? etc Good luck!
