Characteristics Predator A predator is an animal that eats other animals. Birds of prey are predatory birds, but most birds are predators. Birds of prey have been referred to as Raptorial birds or raptors. The word "Raptor" comes from an old Latin word that means "to seize", "to snatch" or "to take". Black hawks are predators or birds of prey. Some predators are found at the end of a food chain if they are not prey for other predators. Characteristics Body, Size and Weight The common black hawk is nearly all black or dark brown with a white patch just behind bill. The bill, legs and feet are bright orange-yellow. The bellow or chest region is buff to whitish with dark blotches. The adult common black hawk is16–20 inches long and weighs a little over two pounds on average. They have specialized bones that are usually lightweight. Many of the bones are hollow. Lightweight bones allow for greater flying abilities. Hooked, sharp beaks are for killing prey and eating flesh. Hawks are quick, strong and have extremely good eyesight. Characteristics Talons/Claws The black hawk has powerful feet with “curve-shaped- falcate" talons for grasping, killing, and tearing prey. A talon is the claw of a bird of prey. It looks like a very sharp fingernail. It’s an important hunting tool. The talon is used for defensive purposes. Forked Tail, Wings and Flying Skills Characteristics Forked Tail, Wings and Flying Skills The black hawks most visible feature is its forked tail. The tail is black with single, thick white band across the middle and a thin, white tip, or it has a number of black and white bars. The shape of its tail enables it to fly skillfully and very fast. It has very broad wings. The wing span is approximately 46 inches from tip to tip. The hawk alternates deep steady wing beats with short to long glides. Soars on thermals/air currents.
