This year’s theme…Conflict and Compromise Try to connect to the theme as much as possible…depending on the topic, you might have more conflict than compromise (or vice versa). NHD Theme Book is available at NHD.org for both students and teacher use. It is 72 pages full of ideas, sample topics, resources, and so much more. Doesn’t just have to be war/treaties… so much more and it’s okay to be creative! Your topic must be at least 20 years old (Before 1997) The Most Important Point: Pick a topic that you are really interested in and want to learn more about. Is there something in your family history you would like to learn about? Was there a history story in school you were really interested in?

Good Questions to Ask Does conflict always lead to compromise? How can compromise prevent conflict? What happens when a compromise fails? Can compromise lead to conflict? What causes conflict? What happens when neither side is willing to compromise?

The 4 C’s to Remember Conflict and Compromise: The theme of this History Day. How much of each is present in your topic? Context: What is the background of this topic? Is it local, national or international? Change: How did your event change the course of history?

What is Conflict? Wars World War I and II Civil Wars (American, English, Chinese etc.) American Revolution Vietnam War Make sure you do not pick an entire war. There are too many things to research. Choose a specific battle or series of events.

What is Conflict? Strong Disagreements Competition for a Goal Abolitionist Movement Civil Rights Era Fight for Equality, Gandhi’s Non-Violent Fight for Independence from England Competition for a Goal Space Race between the U.S. and Russia Nuclear Arms Race

What is Compromise? Compromise is an agreement between 2 parties where each group gets something they want but have to give up something in return. Examples The Treaty of Versailles after World War I The union of the NBA and ABA Yalta Conference during World War II.

Ways to Present your Topic 4th and 5th Graders Presentation Style: 2D Poster Can be done as a group or individually 2-D displays must be flat, poster style displays. No glitter, puffy paint, etc. (imagine rolling a pencil over the board) Check out the rule book for more info!

Presentation Type (Choose 1 of the 5 categories) Performance Category Exhibit Category This is a dramatic portrayal of your topic. Should be less than 10 minutes. Only those students doing the project can set up props. This is a visual representation of your research and its importance. Size limits: 40 inches wide, 30 inches deep, 6 feet high. Use of media must be under 3 minutes long. Words on board must not exceed 500 words.

Presentation Type cont. Historical Paper Category Documentary Category Must be between 1,500 to 2,500 words Citations like footnotes are required. Must be typed and double spaced. Presentation Type cont. Website Category Example Website Must use NHD web site editor beginning at the school level. You may use professional graphics, video, photographs and music on the site. Credit must be given to the sources. More information on https://nhd.weebly.com

Requirements 1) Title Page: Includes title, student names, contest division and category. 2) Process Paper: Description under 500 words of how you conducted your research. Make sure to explain: a) How you chose your topic. b) How you conducted your research c) How you selected your presentation category and how you created your topic d) Explain how your topic relates to the theme.\ 3) Annotated Bibliography of your sources with a short description.

Key Dates History Day projects are due Friday, December 15th when you will present your projects. Winners will be selected the following week.
