Are you Entitled To A Job?    There is a lot of talk about entitlement Can someone tell me what entitlement means? How many of think that having a degree entitles you to a job? Do you think employers are entitled to certain things from employees? Among the top reasons people have difficulty getting a job and keeping it have nothing to do with their skills but everything to do with attitude. Let’s see – view video. YouTube Video: The Entitlement Creed Click Here To Start The Video Source: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cPuH8jg5nQ

Employer Expectations So from the video we can quickly see that Entitlement is a two way street. And many of the qualities of a good employee come from their attitudes about working. In my experience at ________________ company, I hire people and (share your story) or from my experience in the business world , I see many people lose their jobs because (share your personal story). The job market is very competitive. Let me ask you a couple of questions. Advance to next slide.

How many resumes will an employer receive for a single part-time position? These slides are set up with the following slide showing the answer. Give students about 5-10 seconds to read – you can also choose to read the question out loud. You can ask students to share what they think. If someone offers an answer like 25 – ask how many others in the room agree? Does anyone else have a different opinion of the number of resumes an employer will receive for a single part-time position? Take 3-4 answers.

100 - 200 100-200 – Share an example from your personal experience or company with a recent hiring.

Prepare to compete! Resume Tips – Be concise/truthful Research position for keywords Demonstrate how you add value to the company Highlight relevant skills you have learned in high school that are needed for the job Your resume doesn't have much time to make a great impression. In fact, you can count in seconds the time your resume has to get noticed. What can you do to make sure your resume gets you into consideration for an interview? (Source www.aboutcareers.com) Print job postings you're interested in and highlight keywords. Are these words used on your resume? Transform your resume from a job description to a series of accomplishment statements that are of interest to the company by incorporating those keywords. Presenters can share their own tips or experience to add relevant real world experiences to the lesson. This is a great point in the presentation to emphasize skills like communications, leadership and teamwork can be attributes that make you stand out among other people applying for the same job.

True or False? The #1 reason that an application is not considered is because it was not filled out correctly? Read statement and ask students to raise their hands if they think it is true. To encourage participation, ask someone with a raised hand about their opinion.

True Accuracy is one of the first things reviewed before they even look at your name! TRUE – Accuracy is the First pass screening before they even look at your name!

How Does My Use of Drugs or Alcohol Affect Employability? MANY EMPLOYERS REQUIRE YOU TO SUBMIT TO A DRUG SCREENING AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. EMPLOYERS’ ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO TEST YOU IF THEY HAVE SUSPICION. ACCIDENTS ON THE JOB BECAUSE OF IMPAIRMENT COST COMPANIES MONEY. . . Remember there are 100-200 applicants wanting this position! Help students understand how important a drug-free workplace is to your company. Reinforce that choices made today impact their future ability to make money and support themselves.

What About Tattoos & Piercings? x Choice Wisely where you place a frog tattoo! You must meet your employers’ expectations and many workplaces prohibit visible tattoos and piercing – be prepared to cover them up or remove them. Be factual in that as a young person they have to make many choices – and how peer pressure and wanting to fit in can cause you to make decisions TODAY that will have long-term consequences in the REAL WORLD OF WORK. Address how your place of business address tattoos and piercings. Are they permitted? If yes, are they expected to be covered up? What advise to you have to help students best prepare for FIRST IMPRESSIONS?

Employers decide in 5 minutes if they want to hire you? True or False? Employers decide in 5 minutes if they want to hire you? Tell student to think about how they form opinions.

30 seconds or less! YOU only get ONE shot at the first impression! False 30 seconds or less! YOU only get ONE shot at the first impression! FALSE-30 seconds or less! This means you need to act quickly in order to impress the interviewer. 30 seconds is about the time you get to walk in the door, shake their hand, smile and say “Thanks for giving me the opportunity to interview for this position today.” High school students are oftentimes offended by the fact that they are “judged”. However they too, make first impressions. To turn the tables, on responses that this isn’t fair, ask the students to think back when they entered the room today to hear you present. Did you form an opinion based on my clothes? Did you decide before I even spoke if I would be a interesting or boring speaker? Did you make some of your first impressions based on my age? So right, wrong, fair or unfair, we all make FIRST IMPRESSIONS. To help you succeed in getting a job, you need to know that You only get ONE shot at the first impression!

Why Interview? Past behavior is the best indicator of future behavior (how you will perform on the job) The process helps the hiring manager to understand previous experiences, skills demonstrated, personality and work style. Explain why this is important to your company or attributes that you look for when interviewing candidates. Practice interviewing Use examples with positive outcomes Follow up with a written thank you

It is important for me to ask questions during the interview? True or False? It is important for me to ask questions during the interview?

…AND BE READY FOR THE ANSWERS! IF YOU GOOGLE A COMPANY OR COLLEGE – True …AND BE READY FOR THE ANSWERS! IF YOU GOOGLE A COMPANY OR COLLEGE – YOU COULD HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT IT, EMPLOYERS WILL REMEMBER YOU OUT OF 100-200 CANDIDATES! TRUE – And be ready for the answers! If you google a company and could have a conversation about it, Employers will remember you out of all the different job candidates! Also, Make sure you know how to get there, because Late is NEVER a good thing!

Can YOUR words & actions on Social Media impact YOUR employability? Social media can be your friend or your enemy. About a quarter of employers surveyed by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics in 2009 had disciplined an employee for improper activities on social networking sites. If a worker posts something negative, and a manager finds it, he or she can legally be fired, some employment attorneys say. Let’s look at some actual cases are on the next slide.

What YOU post could cost you YOUR job. This is a great opportunity to share how your company uses social media in the hiring/firing process. Social media can be your friend or your enemy. Be careful what you post!

What Coaches, Colleges, & Employers are looking for…… Skills Initiative Interests Community Involvement Positive Posts about Activities, Self, and Others Appropriate Photos & Videos Values “Likes” = You Connect to the Reputation of the Company, Organization, Person, or Cause High School Students need coaching to translate what they are doing in school to employable skills desired by employers. Social media can be a great tool to use to help others see how you strive for success, made accomplishments or are associated with reputable volunteer and business sites. Emphasis that pictures, “likes” and videos speak volumes about your values and character. Social media can be your friend or your enemy. Be careful what you post!
