Apply by December 1, 2016 Submit completed final grades in academic profile section of their online application Have very competitive grades Meet all the course requirements in Grade 11 and Grade 12 CARLA: key message on FROA: This is for top students, only. We will NOT fill all our seats via FROA. So a student who does not get FROA should NOT assume they are not getting in. We will not refuse anyone on FROA. May not be applicable to programs that require supplemental materials (i.e. auditions/portfolios like BFA-O) Note: This only applies to direct-entry students following Canadian curriculum; students from other jurisdictions will be evaluated as soon as the documents requested on the letter of acknowledgement are sent in.  IB students in Canada will be considered on their anticipated diploma scores submitted by the school (likely in February), not the academic profile, for consideration for early admission.

FIRST ROUND OFFERS OF ADMISSION - Timeline December 1, 2017: Students must apply to UBC. January 2018: Students will start to receive their offer letters and admission packages March/April 2018: UBC will verify grades (interim data) July 2018: UBC will verify all final grades upon receipt of final Ministry data In May UBC will look to see if all grades submitted at he time of application are accurate. If they are not student file will be investigated. If all grades are correct UBC will then review course specific minima requirements. If any of these are found to be below the requirements then students will receive an warning email with a reminder to bring up grade/average by June 30. The Rescinding of an offer is only done on final transcripts/grades.

2018 Admissions Cycle Overview Personal Profile Assessments First Round Offers of Admission Admission decisions completed: April 15th (Admit, Waitlist, Refusal) Add’l offers to students on waitlist (incl Sem 2 grades) Dec Feb March April May Jan June Dec 1. Deadline Scholarship/ First Round Admission Jan 15 App Deadline Final Feb 1 Deadline for DL course completion Collect BC HS grades: Semester Final grades from 11/12 List of Sem2 courses in progress (no grades) Linear Final grades from grade 11 Grade 12 interim grades (T2) Accept Deadline: June 1 May 1 for BCOM Personal Profile Reference Checks  IB Grades collection Feb 1 – DL deadline Offers are not first come first served. By May, perhaps not overenrolled.  No guarantees. Admissions criteria is highest between December to late March.  Once we see the complete applicant pool, we can change the criteria. OUAC vs NOT OUAC From an Admissions perspective: Please highlight the importance of OUAC data (and the submission of OAUC numbers from currently attending high school applicants pre-Feb 1st) and the role the OUAC data plays in our evaluations: as Andrew likes to say, the right data at the right time makes all the difference in how fast a decision can be rendered. In cases where an applicant will not be having an OUAC number, we encourage them to contact Admissions early so that we can process their evaluation accordingly (i.e. not be waiting for OUAC data that never appears). In those cases, we will request for the high school to submit a paper transcript directly to our office to facilitate the evaluation process.

Admission Requirements I have put sections headers in so people know we are no longer talking about First Round Offers of Admission

Minimum Requirements High school graduation (June 30) Gr. 11 and 12 program requirements English Language Admission Standard (ELAS) Min. 70% / 67% UBC admission average (Vancouver / Okanagan) English 11/12 final of 70% (Vancouver only) Refer to Ontario sheet regarding requirements ELAS can only be met by 3 years of study in Canada (ENG4U alone cannot be used to meet ELAS as there is no exam component that is distinct from the course grade)

New for 2018: Aboriginal Languages UBC will consider grade 11 Aboriginal language courses to meet the Language 11 requirement, whether on the list of UBC approved courses or not. Grade 12 Aboriginal languages, regardless of the list of UBC approved courses, are eligible to be used in the calculation of the admission average, if applicable. UBC recognizes Canadian Aboriginal language post-secondary courses for admission in place of a Grade 12 approved course. These courses are also eligible to be used toward the language 11 requirement. Self-identified Aboriginal students can also be considered for a Language 11 waiver. Please contact Undergraduate Admissions for more Information.

Competitive Requirements Secondary School Grades: Competitive average Competitive grade on faculty-specific courses (ex. ENGL & MATH for BCOM) Supplemental information as required (auditions, portfolios): Media Studies-V, Music-V, Dental Hygiene-V, B+MM-V, Fine Arts-O, B.Des Deadlines for supplemental information vary Personal Profile Responses to 5 questions on the online application Video interview question for UBCV Sauder BCom Personal Profile: Submitted by Dec. 1 for MES and Centennial scholarship consideration or Jan. 15 application deadline Notes about Course Pacing Online/DL Gr. 12 courses must be  100% completed by February 1 to be used towards an admission average calculation Grade source = OUAC (or high school paper transcript sent directly to UBC with the final grade ) If a GR12 (4U/4M) course does not have a grade at the time of evaluation, we will refer to the final   grade from equivalent Gr. 11 course and use that in the calculation

PERSONAL PROFILE: WHAT IS UBC LOOKING FOR? How can student’s best prepare for the personal profile? Access the online application and review each of the questions. Brainstorm ideas before filling out the answers. It is not just about what you have done; it’s about what you learned from the things you have done. Think of the qualities of a successful student. Be specific, provide examples and details. "Be true to who you are..."

Voice Substance Leadership Engagement & Accomplishment PERSONAL PROFILE: WHAT IS UBC LOOKING FOR? Engagement & Accomplishment Leadership Voice Substance Engagement and Accomplishment. How do you pursue your interests and manage your responsibilities? What do you do with your time when you are not in class? What would you (or others in your community) consider your most significant contributions and accomplishments? Whether it’s winning an international award or taking care of a younger sibling, any experience can teach you something about yourself and/or the world around you. We want to know what you have been doing and what have you have learned from your experiences. Make sure to give specific examples! Leadership. Have you undertaken responsibilities and activities that have benefitted those around you and/or contributed to your community in a meaningful way? If so, what have you learned about yourself and others in the process? Leadership can come in many forms; any act of responsibility and/or initiative that serves others is a form of leadership. Leadership can be demonstrated in a formal role in a group (e.g. being president of a club or captain of a team) or in an informal role as an individual (e.g. taking it upon yourself to help in your community). And remember – it’s not just about being in a leadership role; it’s about what leadership has taught you. Substance. Ask yourself if you have spent sufficient time reflecting upon what you want to say. Have you answered the questions in a detailed and meaningful way? Is the content of your personal profile superficial or clichéd, or are you presenting interesting, well thought-out, and relevant ideas? Remember that the readers at UBC will be reviewing and comparing thousands of personal profiles; the best way to stand out is by making sure you have something meaningful and insightful to say. Voice. Communication is important – how do you communicate your ideas? Regardless of what you choose to write about, ask yourself the following: have I written a personal profile that is genuine and unique to who I am? Does my profile authentically reflect my own words? Will my voice stand out in a meaningful way, or will my profile read like many others?

Secondary School Applicant Admission Decisions by Admission Average, June 2017, UBC Mean 90.5% in Vancouver Mean of 84.4% in Okanagan

SAUder BCOM INTERVIEW Expect open-ended questions about their own opinions and experiences Treat this like a real interview – think about past challenges, achievements, strengths, and beliefs Provide clear, insightful, and complete responses Prepared to use the technology Think of this as a job interview to a business school (not just UBC). Video is not part of the personal profile & only used by Sauder. Ability to think on your fit – ability to think on the spot What will the Sauder Admissions Team be looking for? In addition to excellent grades and a strong Personal Profile, outstanding candidates will: Possess great leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills Be capable of setting and achieving goals Be able to deal with challenging situations Demonstrate solid communication skills Demonstrate involvement in their commun BDES information about their Video Interview is still forthcoming due to pending Ministry approval. ity

DEPTH & BREADTH OF COURSEWORK Additional consideration given for breadth and depth of coursework. Cannot hurt an application, but can help Breadth: Number of senior year courses Depth: Rigour of senior year courses Many students will retake courses to get a higher grade. However, there is a benefit for taking a new course that you are interested in, could also have a benefit. Equity- you don’t need this to get in but this may push you over the edge in terms of the wait list. If student has ability to take additional course and has option of redoing one for higher grade or taking something new. Now both these can help. For example: Completing more than four approved grade 12 courses Completing unapproved courses in addition to approved courses Completing courses that are considered rigorous by the standards of a student’s school. Completing high level high school program: AP Capstone IB Program French Immersion Concurrently completing courses at post-secondary level Moving to BC Curriculum from International Curriculum or being part of an international curriculum in senior years (ie. going on exchanged, dual graduation programs) Who is affected? Students at the margins of the admission bands: Students who miss UBC’s admission cutoffs but show breadth would now be considered for admissibility. Students who previously met UBC’s admission cutoffs but have not demonstrated depth and/or breadth would now be potentially refused when compared to a student with similar grades but who demonstrate depth and/or breadth of grade 12 courses. . Students who excel in the academics are not affected. Students who demonstrate very poor academic performance are not affected. Programs admitting students near the university minimum would not be affected. What to say to students who ask: How can I be assured that if I challenge myself (by taking extra courses, taking more challenging courses, etc), my efforts will be factored in? How exactly will they be factored in? How do I know that Admissions is being fair and equitable in this process? If you are challenging yourself (taking extra coursework, exploring challenging subjects in depth), the result of your efforts will translate directly into a number of areas into your application that are always taken into consideration: such as your answers in your Personal Profile as well as your academic profile. As Andrew says, if you are competitive, you WILL be admitted.   At the end of the day, if an applicant is placed into the waitlisted category, these extra efforts can make an applicant admissible over other waitlisted applicants. Because no two applications are the same, and because Admissions is a comparative and competitive process, we are unable to provide hypothetical details on how your application will be reviewed. The Admissions Office works to uphold the Enrolment Services principles of integrity, respect, excellence and collaboration in all decisions rendered. If an applicant ever feels that their Admissions decision/process has been unfair or information has not been considered, we would encourage them to contact their Admissions Advisor directly after a decision to take that conversation forward.

CANADA 12 (Mar-May 2017) Refuse Decision: Admit Grades + Personal Profile = Admission Decision Review: 2,283 Admit 555 Grades + Personal Profile + Breadth & Depth Review = Waitlist 1,728 Decision: Refuse Refuse Students who had been put on HOLD, were reviewed for D&B starting in March 2017 and this continued through to May 2017 ·         We did a reviews for these groups, ABCA, BCCA, ONCA and CASS. ·         ONCA transcript provide very little detail so these were difficult to complete ·         The information in the attached file is from data  that was only tracked on our a working excel spreadsheet, (so not perfectly tidy to work with),  therefore numbers may not be 100% exact but I am confident they do provide a fairly accurate account, within a few  applications, of what happened with this group of applications.   ·         Some students’ applications were reviewed for B&D for  both their 1st and 2nd choice programs. ·         Students who did not get admitted solely based on our B&D review were put on a waitlist and then often ended up getting admitted at a later date when the GPA sheets changed. ·         As GPA sheets changed and procedures changed and at some point we just discontinued doing these evaluations.
