Welcome To Eco-committee’s Assembly on Endangered Rhino’s

Northern White Rhinoceros This subspecies is a grazer in grasslands and Savanna woodlands. Unfortunately, these animals are extinct in the wild. There are only 8 left in captivity. This species has 2 horns.

Black Rhinoceros Native to the Eastern and Central areas of Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Angola. Although the rhino is referred to as black, it is actually more of a grey/brown/white colour. This species has 2 horns. There are four recognized subspecies of the black rhinoceros: South Central- most numerous South Western East African- Tanzania only West African- extinct

Indian/Greater one horned Rhino Found in parts of North-Eastern India and in protected areas in the Terai of Nepal. Today, about 3,000 rhinos live in the wild, 2,000 of which are found in India's Assam alone. 70% of its population occurs at a single site, Kaziranga National Park.

Sumatran Rhinoceros These rhinos are critically endangered, with only six populations in the wild: 4 in Sumatra, 1 in Borneo and one in the Malay Peninsular. There are estimated to number fewer than 275 in the wild. This species has 2 horns. This species is covered in red/brown hairs.

Javan/Lesser one-horned Rhino This species is critically endangered, with only 1 known population in the wild and no individuals in captivity. It is possibly the rarest large mammal on earth The Javan rhino can live approximately 30–45 years in the wild .

Rhinoceros Species Populations Javan Rhino population: 48 Vietnamese Javan Rhino population: EXTINCT Sumatran Rhino population: 200 Borneo Rhino population: 50 Indian Rhino population: 2,949 Black Rhino population: 4,860 White Rhino population: 20,600 Northern white Rhino population: 8 Western Black Rhino: EXTINCT

The earliest image of a Rhino When the spice ship Nossa Senhora da Ajuda set sail from India for Lisbon in Jan 1515, it included a unusual gift from Sultan Muzafar II to King Manuel I of Portugal – an Indian rhinoceros.

Why are rhino habitats being destroyed? In Asia, 3 types of rhinos live in rainforests. Poaching is a problem but also the forest habitat of the rhinos is being destroyed to provide timber or land for building and farming. In Nepal poachers poison the grass, plants and bushes that Rhino’s eat with deadly pesticides, a type of chemical that can kill Rhino’s. In Africa, poaching gangs race into national parks in trucks, kill rhinos with machine guns, hack off their horns and escape before the guards can stop them. Fences are broken, grass is churned up and trees are knocked down in the process. Natural Habitat Destroyed Habitat

Why do birds sit on rhinos? The rhino has a relationship with oxpeckers, also called tick birds. In Swahili the tick bird is named "askari wa kifaru," meaning "the rhino's guard." The tick bird eats ticks it finds on the rhino and noisily warns of danger. The tick bird also enjoys eating the bugs churned out of the ground when a rhino eats the grass.
