HISTORY OF INDIAN NAVY

INTRODUCTION On 26 Jan 1950 when India Republic, the royal Indian navy was re-designated and the new Indian naval ensign (national flag) The Indian national flag had earlier taken the place of union jack on 15 Aug 1947. soon after Independence day the first cruiser INS Delhi and 03 R class destroyers Rajput, Ranjit and Rana joined the Indian Navy.

INTRODUCTION In late 50’s the second cruiser INS Mysore and 02 Frigates INS Trishul and INS Talwar were acquired. This was followed by the acquisitions of the anti submarine Frigates INS Khukri, Kuthar, Kirpan and Anti Air craft frigates Brahmaputra, Beas and Betwa. With the Joining of these ships the Indian Naval flotilla was constituted in to a fleet.

INTRODUCTION The air craft career INS Vikrant was commissioned in Feb 1961.

GOA OPERATION First time Indian naval ship was deployed for the libration of Goa in 1961 In the encounter that took place off Goa Portuguese warship Albuquerque was disabled After that Indian navy established its command of the sea Off Goa and was able to enforce a blockade of the port there by denying the Portuguese of any further assistance from the sea.

GOA OPERATION In the mid of 60’s the only addition to the Indian navy was an oil tanker acquired from Germany. With this addition of the oil tanker the range of the fleet increased as also its capability and endurance at sea.
