St. Mary School In Motion

In Motion Goals Increase our time to at least 25 to 30 minutes per day by the end of the year To think up new In Motion ideas and activities Be involved with community more and involve community in school. Sharing information with school family and community

In Motion We are in phase 2 of our In Motion program Our Catalyst team consists of Mrs. Oak, Ms. Artiga, Mrs Delmage, Xyrus Smith, Elise Melanson, Jordan Usher and Maguire Abell Since implementing In Motion (DPA) in our school behaviour problems have decreased. Student awareness and knowledge of the need for physical activity has become greater, especially in the middle years. The physical fitness of all students has increased. In grade 7/8 instead of playing games, we have focused on increasing our stamina by running , and doing stations including push press, burpies and weighted squats.

Take the Lead Take the Lead involves the grade 7/8 students planning and running recess games for all students in the school, including mini-stick hockey, parachute, and even a indoor hockey league for the 5/6’s and 7/8’s. Due to St. Mary’s temporarily not having a play structure at the beginning of the year, our 7/8 class gave up every recess for the month of September to teach children games. Due to our involvement with the students, there was no time for misbehaviour.

TTL in Training

Classroom Activities Have brain breaks (have a cd with in motion songs- (YMCA, Bird Dance, Macarena, The Hokie Pokie, Cha Cha Slide) Jammin’ minutes booklet for each classroom In Motion kits are delivered every Monday after assembly to help increase In Motion minutes. Prizes Prizes for most classroom In Motion minutes in a month- Double Shift - Passes Toboggans Extra recess Field house activity

Whole School Activities Once a month, half hour activities. ex: Sock hop Card deliveries Community clean-ups Assembly movement games Mission fair

Impacts of In Motion Eight of our 7/8 students since being part of phase one have made it a priority to join either a exercise class or the YMCA Seen improvements in lunches, snacks and over all physical fitness. Adults coming into the school have commented on how healthy we eat and how active we are! We won the Mosaic Extreme School Makeover for our initiatives in nutrition, physical activity and environment and community connections.
