RULE #1 Capitalize the first word of every sentence. football players need to drink water during practice. school begins early every morning. i am ready for a holiday.

RULE #2 Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation that is a complete sentence. A direct quotation gives the speaker’s exact words.
RULE #2 Jack said, “ i need new shoes for school.” Mr. Olivis yelled, “go to your class!” Mr. Olivis yelled, “Go to your class!”
RULE # 3 When a quote is interrupted by words such as “she said,” DO NOT begin the second part of the sentence with a capital letter. HINT: If there is a comma(,) before the second part of the quote-then do NOT begin the second part with a capital letter. HINT: If there is a period(.) before the second part of the quote-then DO begin the second part with a capital letter.
RULE #3 “ They went to the mall,” said Kelly, “so they could buy new shoes.” “ Many people like to build new homes,” said Bob. “ I like homes that are already built.”
RULE # 4 Do not capitalize an indirect quotation. An indirect quotation does NOT repeat a person’s exact words and does not appear in quotation marks. An indirect quotation is often introduced by the word that.
RULE # 4 Nick read that most sharks only attack when provoked. Mr. Olivis said that the dress code would be strictly enforced.
RULE #5 Capitalize the first word in the salutation (greeting) of a letter. Capitalize the first word in the closing of a letter. Capitalize the title and names of the person addressed.
