Strategy for short answer response questions (SAR’s) The a.p.e. Method Strategy for short answer response questions (SAR’s)

Ape Method A- answer the question P- Prove it! E- explain!

A- Answer Begin by restating and Answering the question asked. Think about the way you answer a question in a complete sentence!

P- Prove it Prove your answer by going back to the passage and providing a direct or indirect quote A direct quote is more obvious and thus less likely to be overlooked. Therefore , this is the PREFERRED method.

Direct Quote Indirect Quote This is where you copy the author’s words DIRECTLY, word for word! Don’t forget your quotation marks. Ex: The author stated that “she knew all along what was behind that door.” This is where you put into YOUR own words what the author is stating. Ex: The author showed what she really was capable of by expressing that she knew what was behind the door.

E- Explain Explain the evidence from the text you used in your answer!

Remember ONLY 10 lines are provided to complete your short Answer Response so plan or draft your paragraph first!
