May 24 and 25 Agenda Grammar - Subordinating Conjunction Review Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses Freedom Writers - Background on Rodney King Riots Movie Discussion Learning Targets Youth will engage in thought provoking discussions that allow them to think and learn about tolerance, respect, trust, overcoming adversity, family relationships, anti-violence, steps to finding success and inequalities that exist in education. Youth will have the opportunity to extend their learning through interactive activities that address the discussion themes

Let’s Review the Homework! Be prepared to share a sentence that you wrote, and justify the subordinating conjunction used and where the subordinating clause is.

Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses An adjective clause is either restrictive or nonrestrictive. A restrictive clause contains information necessary to the sentence’s meaning. A nonrestrictive clause contains information that can be left out without affecting the basic meaning of the sentence.

Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses Examples The man is fixing my bike. The car I want is out of my price range. My brother cannot read. Nonrestrictive Clauses Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote “The Raven”, is one of the greatest American poets. The man, who is very tall, is fixing my bike. We did not pay our bills, so our power will be shut off.

Check Your Work 1. The guitar is the only instrument I can play well. 2. Joel, who plays many instruments, taught me how to play the guitar. 3. Ellen reads mystery novels at a fast pace. 4. Cindy, who makes a lot of money, works over seventy hours a week. 5. The letter, which Grace delivered to Kevin, told him how to find the key.

What about the back of the paper? Complete the rest of the paper for homework!

The Rodney King Riots Rodney King Riots On the evening of March 3, 1991 Rodney King was caught by LAPD after a high speed chase. The officers pulled him out of the car and beat him, which was caught on tape as evidence. How does this affect the Freedom Writers? The students were living in this time period and it constantly affected their lives. https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/the-freedom-writers-diary

Movie Time! Sit back, relax, watch the movie, and think about living in a post Rodney King incident society -- how it affected the students and how it affects you.

Discussion As Mrs. Gruwell attempts to connect with the students, do they open up to her? Explain. How are the students handling the society they live in? How do they handle living in a post Rodney King incident society? Do you think the students are doing what is best for them? Explain and justify your answer in detail. How does Mrs. Gruwell begin to understand what they are going through? How do we see heroism in today’s part of the movie?
