Writing Large Numbers In Scientific Notation By: Nyasia, Indigo, Alexis, Kristen

Introduction Scientific Notation is a system of writing numbers using exponents and power of ten. A number in scientific notation is written as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten.

How Can We Correctly Write 863,000,000 In Scientific Notation? You have to rewrite 863,000,000 as a decimal. But the decimal should not be less than 1 and not greater than 9. 8.63

The type of symbol you should always use is: When you have the decimal you have to multiply by a power of 10 8.63 x 10^?

What will the exponent be for 10? Now that you know how to multiply 8.63x10, now you have to locate the number of spaces your decimal point has moved (to the left). So you use the number of places it moved which was 8 and you use it as an exponent for the 10. 10^8

Scientific Notation Now you are ready to write the number in Scientific Notation 863,000,000 = 8.63 x 10^8

Checking Your Answer 8.63 x 10^8 into standard form is 863,000,000. The exponent for the 10 is 8, so the decimal moves 8 places to the right. 863,000,000. There will be 6 zeros added since there are two decimal places already.

CONCLUSION Writing a large number into scientific notation is easy, all you have to do is make the large number a decimal. Then you multiply that decimal by 10 with your exponent. After that, you can compare the decimal and the number to see how many places the decimal point has moved. Then you find out that the exponent is 8 and when you multiply 8.63 x 10^8 you get the large number you started with.
