Nutrition . Class 22: In the News

What’s in the News? Coconut Oil Paleo Diet Organic? Farm raised Fish Probiotics

Coc0nut Oil Dr. Oz: “Superpowers” Dr. Joseph Mercola: “near miraculous” Coconut Oil Distributor: “Protect against cancer”, “dissolve kidney stones”, “lose excess body fat”

Coconut Oil…the details Fat in Coconut Oil – 92% saturated Olive oil ~ 15% saturated fat Beef fat ~ 50% saturated fat Butter ~ 63% saturated fat

Coconut Oil…the claims Accelerated weight loss Dr. Mercola – sells coc0nut oil for $65/gallon Alzheimer’s reversal Book sales Heart disease – based on Polynesian Islanders incidence of heart disease

Coconut Oil…the bottom line There is NO good evidence that coconut oil can help you lose weight or cure Alzheimer’s disease. MCT oil may lead to modest weight loss when substituted for other oils. There is NO good evidence that “virgin” coconut oil does less damage to the heart than conventional coconut oil.

Going Paleo What is the Paleo Diet? Heavy on: Meat Vegetables Some nuts Not Allowed: Grains Dairy Sugar Caffeine Alcohol

Going Paleo Grains – the absence of starchy foods in Paleo diet is based on FANTASY of what our ancestors ate. No evidence that Paleo = weight loss. Paleo food doesn’t really exist today! Geography plays a role in how we evolve, but just because people adapt to certain areas doesn’t make it healthy. Note: cooked tomatoes are preferable, since heat allows more desirable antioxidants in tomatoes to be made available to the body. And because lycopene is fat-soluble, heatting tomatoes with oil can improve absorption.

Paleo…the bottom line There are NO long term, large sample research studies to back up claims of Paleo diet being healthier, promoting weight loss, etc.

Organic vs. Conventional Organic Claims: More Nutritious - Higher content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals Broccoli also contains other protective constituents like beta-carotene, which can help prevent cancer and heart disease.

Go Organic! In about 60% of studies, organic food is higher in some nutrients than conventionally produced food. About 30-35% of the time there is no statistical difference 5-10 % of studies the nutrient levels are higher in conventional food. In general, levels are 5-15% higher in organic foods Commonly used vegetables from the allium family include onions, garlic, leeks, scallions, and chives.

Organic vs. Conventional Most Important Thing To Do: Eat more fruits and vegetables  Other studies suggest that eating garlic regularly can help prevent cancer.

Farm Raised Fish vs. Wild Health benefits? Higher contaminant levels in farm raised? GMO

Farm Raised Fish vs. Wild

Farm Raised Fish vs. Wild…bottom line Farm raised salmon contained 7-10 times higher levels of PCBs, dioxins and pesticides than wild salmon. Bottom line = don’t eat farmed salmon more than once a month

What do you think?? What areas are you concerned about? What have you heard recently ‘in the news’?
