‘How to support and develop academics to become academic leaders: my personal journey’ Prof Julian Chaudhuri, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Informatics University of Bradford

Introduction How do Universities encourage and motivate their academics to become leaders? How do they ‘capture’ their interest as new lecturers and at recruitment? How do we identify and develop the ‘talent’? My personal journey What I learned as a Head of Department What I am learning as a Dean

This is personal…

Dean Ass Dean HoD D o Studies Lecturer SL Reader Prof

What did I learn as Head of Department?

Problems in organisations arise from people, so recruit them properly, then develop them. RECRUIT THEM PROPERLY!

Research Teaching Collegial

What have I learned as (Associate) Dean? Discipline differences are important to take on board - chemical engineering vs other engineering? Set expectations of performance - good teaching is the norm, fairness and consistency Transparency, ie workload models, finance etc - also works as motivation? Growing the talent pool - Faculty fellowship academy story

Nurturing the talent: Faculty Fellowship Academy Venture to ‘home-grow’ future academic leaders, by accelerating their learning, skills and experience. Training needs analysis and PDP Mentor assigned outside the home department A variety of workshops to support them Peer support with all aspects of development Support for fellowship proposals

Leader Hard-working Success Reflective Talent

Conclusions Recruitment is key – don’t rush it, it’s a big investment! The leadership challenges have changed over the years – as has HE Have access to people who can help as mentors, coaches, role models University promotion criteria have to be clear Talent development and retention are too important to be left to chance Succession planning – does anyone do this well?

Thank you! j.chaudhuri1@bradford.ac.uk
