Presentation transcript:

Social Contract Theory Is an implicit (silent) agreement between everyone to give up some freedoms and rights of the state of nature for the advantages of living under government.

State of Nature Governed by natural law: A kind of common sense in behavior among other people Everyone respects one another’s Life, Liberty, and Property (these are their natural rights) Why quit the state of nature in favor of a government? (to protect natural rights)

Property When you mix your labor with something in its natural state, any useful products of that mixture are your property You can only own what you can use You must leave “enough and as good” for others

Defects of the state of nature: You have to spend all of your time protecting your property. Needs to be a set of impartial laws for everyone. (Legislative) Needs to be an impartial judge to interpret rules and arbitrate disputes. (Judicial) Needs a dispassionate enforcer of rules. (Executive)
