Problem Statement The lack of student involvement and engagement in campus communities, events and organizations can negatively impact academic performance. Due to the lack of available resources needed to succeed, college students may have trouble finding suitable housing, tutoring services, or on/off campus entertainment and amenities for a positive college experience.

Problem Characteristics Students are unaware of events, resources and organizations on campus. Students find it difficult to find optimal, safe and affordable living situations on and off  campus. Students not from Hampton Roads are unaware of local restaurants, grocery stores, entertainment, etc.

ODU Freshman Retention These three points are leading causes of students being uninvolved on campus. These students are more likely to drop out or transfer schools. At ODU alone, 19% of freshman do not return after their first year (College Factual).

Student Retention Students who enrolled college in the past twenty years that left without a degree or certificate. 31 million according to NSC Research Center (2014) One-third of which dropped out before the start of sophomore year (NSC, 2014)

First Time College Student Retention The rate of all first-time undergraduates who enrolled in Fall 2008 that finished their degrees within 6 years was 55%, nationally according to NSC Research Center (2014). Of all first-time students who started in Fall 2012, only 68.7% returned to college in any US institution in Fall 2013 (NSC, 2014)

Method to Solve Problem A web-based application developed by a team making use of Agile programming methods.

Engaged? ODU’s Housing and Residence Life residential curriculum defines being “engaged” as a status attained by an individual who attends 5 or more events on campus per semester. Attendance is tracked via card swipe and the data is collected by the department. Since this system was implemented, a direct correlation between engagment and retention has been found.

A single platform to get students engaged in the campus community. Consolidated live feed of all upcoming events. Students can get information about on and off campus housing opportunities, complete with verified first hand reviews from students. Our specified target audience is college students at ODU.

Factors of Student Engagement According to a study published  by the Western Kentucky University (Garland, 2010) There is a direct correlation between a student’s GPA and… The number of student organizations the student participates in. Officer status within student organization. The length of time the student is involved with the organization.

Impact of Student Engagement 33% performance gap between the graduation rates for native freshman club leaders and non-club leaders (CSUS, 2011) Transfer students who were club leaders achieved a graduation rate that was 13% higher than that of non-club leader transfers (CSUS, 2011)

What Does NGage not do? NGage does not facilitate Creating/scheduling tutoring appointments within the application. Applying for housing in any capacity. Purchasing tickets within the application.

Conclusion NGage will lead to increased student involvement in campus community events and organizations and aid students in finding housing on or off campus. This will lead to a better academic performance and an overall positive college experience.
