The best environmental choice in seafood Fishery Scoring Examples To Try

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Examples Agenda Lobster fishery example – Description – Questions and Answers on: Stock status (PI 1.1.1) Reference Points (PI 1.1.2) Stock Rebuilding (PI )

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Fishery Description

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Stock Status Have a go at scoring the lobster fishery for PI (1.1.1) the stock status, using the scoring Guideposts below and give the rationale too. ComponentPI CategoryPISG60SG80SG100 OutcomeStock status (C1) The stock is at a level which maintains high productivity and has a low probability of recruitment overfishing It is likely that the stock is above the point where recruitment would be impaired. It is highly likely that the stock is above the point where recruitment would be impaired. The stock is at or fluctuating around its target reference point. There is a high degree of certainty that the stock is above the point where recruitment would be impaired. There is a high degree of certainty that the stock has been fluctuating around its target reference point, or has been above its target reference point, over recent years.

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Reference Points Have a go at scoring the lobster fishery for PI (Reference points), using the scoring Guideposts below and give the rationale too. ComponentPI CategoryPISG60SG80SG100 OutcomeReference points Limit and target reference points are appropriate for the stock. Generic limit and target reference points are based on justifiable and reasonable practice appropriate for the species category. Reference points are appropriate for the stock and can be estimated. The limit reference point is set above the level at which there is an appreciable risk of impairing reproductive capacity. The target reference point is such that the stock is maintained at a level consistent with B MSY or some measure or surrogate with similar intent or outcome. For low trophic level species, the target reference point takes into account the ecological role of the stock. Reference points are appropriate for the stock and can be estimated.. The limit reference point is set above the level at which there is an appreciable risk of impairing reproductive capacity following consideration of relevant precautionary issues. The target reference point is such that the stock is maintained at a level consistent with B MSY or some measure or surrogate with similar intent or outcome, or a higher level, and takes into account relevant precautionary issues such as the ecological role of the stock with a high degree of certainty.

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Stock Rebuilding Should the lobster fishery be scored for PI Stock Rebuilding? If yes, use the scoring Guideposts below to obtain a score and give the rationale too. If not, explain why. ComponentPI CategoryPISG60SG80SG100 OutcomeStock rebuilding (C2) Where the stock is depleted, there is evidence of stock rebuilding. Where stocks are depleted rebuilding strategies which have a reasonable expectation of success are in place. Monitoring is in place to determine whether they are effective in rebuilding the stock within a specified timeframe. Where stocks are depleted rebuilding strategies are in place. There is evidence that they are rebuilding stocks, or it is highly likely based on simulation modelling or previous performance that they will be able to rebuild the stock within a specified timeframe. Where stocks are depleted, strategies are demonstrated to be rebuilding stocks continuously and there is strong evidence that rebuilding will be complete within the shortest practicable timeframe.

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Stock Status Answer Performance Indicator Score Stock Status (lobster fishery)(lobster fishery) 100 Rationale: The stock biomass has been evaluated as 70% of B 0, with a 95% confidence interval of ±15%, meaning that the stock biomass is estimated to have only a 2.5% chance of being below 55% of B 0. B msy is the target reference point, assumed to be 40% of B 0. The current stock is thus above the target reference point. Indications are that the stock has been consistently at this abundance for several years, therefore the stock has been fluctuating around, or above, its target reference point over recent years. There is a high degree of certainty around these figures, given by the lack of overlap between the probable range for the true biomass level relative to B 0 (55-85%) and the target reference point (40%). Since both of the scoring issues are met at the 100 level, a maximum 100 score is assigned.

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Reference Points Answer Performance Indicator Score Reference Points (lobster fishery)(lobster fishery) 85 Rationale: B msy is assumed to be available at 40% B 0 and B lim is set as 0.5 B msy. Although not explicitly tested on this stock, these reference points have been shown to be appropriate for Atlantic lobsters elsewhere, and are default reference levels referred to as acceptable by MSC in FAM v2 paragraph a). This means that the 80 scoring guidepost is met on the first scoring issue. Since the limit reference point is set at a level consistent with avoiding a risk of impairing reproductive capacity, the 2 nd scoring issue at SG80 is met; and since the fishery uses an MSY consistent reference point as its target the 3 rd scoring issue in SG 80 is met. This is not a low trophic level stock, so the 4 th scoring issue under SG 80 is not applicable. At the 100 level, only the first scoring issue is met, because additional precautionary issues have not been factored in when choosing the default reference points given. With all of the 80 level scoring issues being met, and one 100 level scoring issue being met, a score of 85 is justified. N/A Reference points are appropriate for the stock and can be estimated.. The limit reference point is set above the level at which there is an appreciable risk of impairing reproductive capacity following consideration of relevant precautionary issues. x The target reference point is such that the stock is maintained at a level consistent with B MSY or some measure or surrogate with similar intent or outcome, or a higher level, and takes into account relevant precautionary issues such as the ecological role of the stock with a high degree of certainty. x

The best environmental choice in seafood Scoring Example – Stock Rebuilding Answer Performance Indicator Score Stock Rebuilding (lobster fishery)(lobster fishery) N/A Rationale: No need to trigger this PI as the stock is not depleted.
