New Teachers Induction/Retention EDU 7527 Mr. Tim Martin Elaine Gayden New Teachers Induction/Retention EDU 7527 Mr. Tim Martin

Definitions Recruitment - The process of identifying and hiring the best-qualified candidate (from within or outside of an organization) for a job vacancy, in a most timely and cost effective manner. Retention - An effort by a business to maintain a working environment which supports current staff in remaining with the company. Many employee retention policies are aimed at addressing the various needs of employees to enhance their job satisfaction and reduce the substantial costs involved in hiring and training new staff.

It is essential for students to be afforded quality teaching in order to achieve academically. It is also critical that school districts implement recruitment plans that facilitate the hiring of highly qualified teachers.

Jackson Public Schools Does not have a comprehensive recruitment plan Have teacher incentives Does not have a teacher’s retention plan in place This means that teachers are not being regarded as the most critical component of a child’s instructional program.

New Teachers Jackson Public Schools (JPS) offer newly hired teachers a three day orientation class Nine (9) hours of training Incentives

JPS Continued Have financial incentives to recruit teachers, but they have no plan of action to keep them. The fact remains that most JPS teachers are simply burnout and frustrated with their jobs because of discipline problems, school violence, poor working conditions, and lack of support from colleagues and the school district.

Teachers Salaries Mississippi teachers’ salaries are drastically low compared to teacher’s salaries in other states. JPS is losing teachers to other school districts or because they find alternative career opportunities outside of the teaching field.

Problems Teachers and administrators moved around too much Non-certified teachers in low-performing schools Discipline Problems Low Test Scores Low Salaries

My Thoughts Get the right people in the right place Will the new Superintendent be effective? What they can do to inspire and retain good, quality teachers

Thank You
