APHE Editorial Process Digital Commons Training http://digitalcommons.odu.edu/aphe/ Hello and welcome to editor training for Academic Perspectives in Higher Education. This short training video will outline the article review process from author submission to journal publication.

Before you start… Go to http://digitalcommons.odu.edu/aphe/ Click My Account at the bottom of the page, and log in if you know your password. If you are already in the system but don’t know your password, enter your email address and then click Forget your password? An email will be sent, allowing you to create/change your password. Once you do this, you can log in. We use the Digital Commons Open access institutional repository to house the APHE publication. Each editor has been added to the digital commons/APHE site. If you have not already done so, you should go to the site to create your password.

Submission and Review Process Articles are submitted by authors using the Submit Article tab on the APHE home page.

Submission and Review Process Sample reviewer/editor email: Article is: Submitted by author. Reviewed by the Managing Editor, and if approved, assigned a reviewer/editor (you) via the Digital commons site. Reviewer/editor (you) receives email asking if you will review the article. Once the article is submitted, it is reviewed by the managing editor and assigned a reviewer/editor. These terms may be used interchangeably on the digital commons/APHE site. Once an article is assigned to you, you will receive an email like the one pictured on the right of the screen.

The link in the email will take you to this page where you can download the PDF of the article. *If you are not logged in, choosing Download PDF will take you to the log in screen.

After the article downloads: After the article downloads, you can save it and then click the back button to return to the review page. There you can choose whether or not to review the article. After the article downloads, you can save it and then click the back button to return to the review page.

You’ve agreed to review! You have 21 days from the time you say “yes” to complete your review. Use the APHE Editorial Comments Form: available when you click Submit Review. The Editorial Comments Form provides a framework for reviewing an article. Complete the Editorial Comments Form, save, and upload when you are ready to submit. Maintain the double blind process by ensuring that your name is not included anywhere in the document. You will be asked for a publishing decision on the article. Please select one of the options listed. Provide constructive, positive feedback to the author. Remember that these are early career scholars, and your feedback can help them strengthen their writing.

What happens next? Your review goes back to the managing editor and the APHE team, who then consider all editors’ reviews prior to making a decision to accept or reject the article. If the article is accepted, the managing editor consolidates all editors’ reviews and shares targeted feedback along with updates required for publication by the author(s). If the article is rejected, the author is notified and constructive feedback is made along with encouragement to submit articles for future publication.

The author’s next step. The author has the option to make the requested changes, or decline publication. Once changes are made and resubmitted, the article is reviewed by the APHE team. If updates are satisfactory, the article is sent to copy editors for review of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and fact checking. If author’s updates are not satisfactory, the article will be returned for additional edits.

And now we publish… Once all updates and edits are made, articles receive a final review and we publish on the APHE website. We will notify all editors prior to publication, sharing the titles of the articles that will be published. Please contact the managing editor if you have questions about why an article was or was not published.

Thank You!!! Publishing Academic Perspectives in Higher Education is a team process, and we couldn’t do it without you. Contacts: Editorial process questions: aphe@odu.edu Digital Commons site questions: support@dc.bepress.com
