DO NOW: discuss with partner “What a day,” Officer Dan said as he hung up his hat. His police rifle was still slung around his shoulder. Dan thought back to his days in the Marines, when he would go on 5 mile runs with his gear strapped to his back. Was he still that tough? Or was he just a bitter old police officer, out of shape and out of touch? A twinkle glistened from Dan’s eye. He jumped out of the front door, his rifle still on his shoulder. He sprinted for a half mile, turned around, and shot a bullet straight through his hat. “Hats off to THAT,” Dan said. He blew the smoke from the barrel of the rifle and smiled. HOW DID HE DO IT?

Dan hung the hat on the barrel of his rifle. An answer Dan hung the hat on the barrel of his rifle.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE Interpret gun shot residue evidence. Evaluate ballistics evidence at a simulated crime scene.

TODAY’S AGENDA Do now: officer dan’s hat Gun shot residue – read / write notes Read lab instructions & rubric. Perform lab.

GSR – gunshot residue. Tiny particles expelled from a gun when it is fired. Angle of impact – can tell you about location of gun relative to victim’s body.

Residue Firearm Residue Gunshot residue (GSR) – tiny particles expelled from a firearm when it is fired When a firearm is discharged, the bullet, unburned and partially burned particles of gunpowder, and smoke are propelled out the barrel toward the target If the muzzle of the weapon is sufficiently close, these products will be deposited onto the target The distribution of gunpowder particles and other residues around a bullet hole allows for an estimation of the distance from which a handgun or rifle was fired

Residue (continued) Firearm Residue (continued) The precise distance from which a handgun or rifle has been fired is determined through careful comparison of the powder-residue pattern located on the victim’s clothing or skin against test patterns the suspect weapon males when fired at varying distances from a target By comparing the test and evidence patterns, the examiner may find enough similarity in shape and density to formulate an opinion about the distance from which the shot was fired

Residue (continued) Firearm Residue (continued) When the weapon is held in contact with (or less than 1 inch from) the target, it creates a star-shaped (stellate) tear pattern around the bullet hole entrance, rimmed by a smokeless deposit of vaporous lead A halo of vaporous lead (smoke) deposited around a bullet hole normally indicates a discharge of 12 to 18 inches or less Scattered specks of unburned and partially burned powder grains without any accompanying soot are often observed at distances up to 25 inches (and occasionally as far as 36 inches) http://www.slideshare.net/annperry09/ballistics-toolmark-analysis

Residue (continued) Firearm Residue (continued) More than 3 feet will not usually result in deposits of powder residue, When garments or other evidence relevant to a shooting are taken to the crime laboratory, the surfaces of all items are first examined microscopically for the presence of gunpowder residue

March 23 – Austin TX Police officers have secured the scene of a mass killing. 7 decapitated heads were found, along with an assortment of bullets and casings. Each head has at least one gunshot wound. Ballistics experts have been called in to collect and analyze the evidence. Officer Dan is the only suspect. Casings from Officer Dan’s home are available for analysis.

How was she shot in the head? DO NOW: LEFT PAGE A woman was found dead in her car due to a bullet through the head. The doors were locked and the windows were rolled up, yet there were no bullet holes. How was she shot in the head?

It was a convertible and the top was down. An answer It was a convertible and the top was down.

EXIT TICKET How close was the gun when it was shot? A 6’ tall person was found with a single bullet wound on their chin. A star-shaped GSR pattern was around the wound. There was no exit wound. How close was the gun when it was shot? Was this a shotgun or handgun/rifle? If it was a handgun/rifle, was it high or low caliber? Speculate about the relative position of the shooter and victim if the wound angle was 75 degrees above bottom of the chin. (entrance wound was on the chin, pointing up.) What is the most important thing you have learned about ballistics and firearms ?
